Richard Strauss: 4 Letzte Lieder (4 Last Songs), TrV 296 Malven (Mallows), TrV 297 (arr. W. Rihm for voice and orchestra) Eine Alpensinfonie (An Alpine Symphony), Op. 64, TrV 233. Anja Harteros, soprano Dresden Staatskapelle Christian Thielemann, conductor.
The second CD, Signature Roles at the Met Opera, is a reissue of recordings Fleming made for Decca over the years, with a variety of conductors and orchestras. The title is misleading; the fine print reads that these are "the soprano's most acclaimed roles, many performed at the Me. Decca doesn't identify the source of the performances, so it requires some sleuthing to figure out when and under what circumstances the recordings were made. taken from a 1998 album Strauss Heroines. These are in fact some of Fleming's most characteristic roles from the late- and post-Romantic eras, and in each, her velvety voice and emotional and dramatic focus are on superb display. Here, closing the CD with the tender, bittersweet, ambiguous finale to Capriccio is a brilliant artistic decision.

Strauss: Four Last Songs has been added to your Cart. On September 22, Fleming will open the Met Opera Season with a Gala featuring her in her most acclaimed roles. Renée Fleming's voice is still so beautiful and in such glorious condition that it’s difficult to believe that she has been singing professionally for over 20 years and will be 50 next year. These are beautifully recorded performances of Richard Strauss's four last songs and a range of operatic areas which Fleming has made her trademark specials. Her voice and her wonderful phrasing and dramatic delivery are uniquely suited to these pieces and no-one else does them as well as she does in the present era.
RICHARD STRAUSS - Four Last Songs - Vier Letzte Lieder; Lieder: Freundliche Vision; Verführung; Winterweihe; Ariadne - Renée Fleming - Münchner Philharmoniker - Christian Thielemann. Renée Fleming Münchner Philharmoniker Christian Thielemann. Renée Fleming, Münchner Philharmoniker, Christian Thielemann. Total Playing Time 55:18. I love Renee Fleming's recording of Strauss's Four Last Songs with the Munich Philharmonic. And at the sometime it's technically amazing - there's that sense of legato, and the way you feel she has an endless breath and can carry a phrase through without forcing it.
