Exmilitary, also known as Ex Military, is the debut mixtape by experimental hip hop group Death Grips.

Exmilitary is the debut full length mixtape from west coast experimental hip-hop 3 piece Death Grips. Released in 2011, it features 13 songs, 3 of which were on their debut EP Death Grips, which was released earlier in the same year. The second song on the album, Guillotine, became a defining song for the band in it’s early years. The video for that song has over 5 million views on YouTube. Exmilitary Q&A.

Exmilitary avoids any of the flaws outlined above, but it's still a potentially alienating album: unnerving when you're not on its aggro wavelength, inviting when you are, and transfixing either way, thanks to the aggregate work of Death Grips' core. The raspy, deliberate MC Ride doesn't so much flow as bellow. r Flatlander and co-producer Info Warrior hit both sides of the audio-visual equation with overloaded noise (check the "Guillotine" video for starters).

Exmilitary is Death Grips ' debut mixtape, released for free on April 25, 2011. Spread Eagle Cross the Block. Known for It. I Want It I Need It (Death Heated). Black Google, the official collection of stems from Exmilitary.

Death Grips - Exmilitary. There are many emotions that can be associated with hip-hop. The past year has seen the rise of shock-and-awe act Odd Future which has been making a name for themselves for their rather over the top songwriting and antics. The one defining factor that makes Death Grips mixtape Exmilitary so astounding is its one emotion, anger. Seriously, this album makes everything from Wu-Tang sound like an season of Barney and Friends. At thirteen songs and just under the fifty minute marker, what we get on Exmilitary is a collection of beats and lyrics that are dredged up from the scum of one’s mind and brought into sonic format.

There's still copies of this on Orm's site for 10 bucks, don't pay 70 for this lol
artman artman
as of 2019/06/15 there are still 40 exc. copies left! Everyone who wants a copy should hurry :x
Oveley Oveley
Has a lot of surface noise and because of the label placement on B side my needle runs right to the center on top of the label. Play this record as loud as you can as it was the original was intended.
BlackBerry BlackBerry
Due to the nature of this album I dont think it sounds too bad. All in all its just a bootleg. There is considerable surface noise at the beggining of each side, bit muddy at some points too. Also, I feel silly commeting fidelity of a DG record. Just blast it loud.
Xtintisha Xtintisha
Like many others, I experienced a fair amount of surface noise and crackles on this pressing. The worst part, however, is that on side C, the groove runs into the center label on my pressing, causing my needle to just back a considerable amount and skip along the surface. All in all, I love the album, but just no the pressing.
Priotian Priotian
Picked up on Juno UK for £15, considering I never expected to own a copy of this, I couldn't not for that price. I was expecting the worst, but it doesn't sound too awful. Fair bit of surface noise in quieter moments, but sounds clear, powerful and well defined. No major pops or crackles. Will certainly do the trick until they do an official repressing.
Winasana Winasana
Any opinions on sound quality on this press ?black bootleg gets some praise.. colored is mixed.
Livina Livina
Just want to make clear that this reissue has at least two different cassette shells.
Vivados Vivados
managed to get this a few weeks ago, winning it on ebay for £26. received it to find it was half played through. so i listened to it through to see if it was all good - apart from the occasional analogue pops, the sound is pretty damn good, and way more stereo than i was expecting. to a point, i actually prefer the cassette sound to the digital release! way more personality. EDIT: it also appears my side A and B are the wrong way round.
huckman huckman
How would you price the cassette? would LOVE to see how much its worth.

Since the original source flacs are 55 mins...Anyone knows what they shortened to make it 45mins at most?
Very helpful comment. Strongly encourage you to add these to the release notes as they seem pretty accurate.
Aloo Aloo
They cut down 2 of the songs in length. Check the MP3s.
Braned Braned
i dont have this on LP but exmilitary is about 48 minutes, with those edits mentioned, they probably shortened it by a minute or two
They shortened a bunch of the instrumental parts of the album- The small audio snippet at the end of Lord of the Game (- 4 seconds)- A good chunk of Cut Throat (- 12 seconds)- The end of Klink before the drum sample comes in. (- 31 seconds)- Half of 5D (- 18 seconds)- Part of the end of Thru the Walls (- 15 seconds)And somehow this was enough to fit it on one record.
Lynnak Lynnak
I just checked, the records weigh over 200 grams, to be exact the first one was 207g and the second was 217g (i had them inside of diskeeper 2.0 sleeves, they might add a gram or two)
Urllet Urllet
i just received this record, im currently on Klink, so far the sound is fine, apart from the surface noise the music is fine.
Groll Groll
700+ people “have” this record like 30 people “have” this
The Rollers of Vildar The Rollers of Vildar
How do you know they pressed more than 500? Because you're a doctor? You stayed at a Holiday Inn last night? You're a genius. Unless you worked at the pressing plant and pressed them, don't be a dingus.
Androwyn Androwyn
Also, this record's resale value is insane enough that it used to change hands a lot. I would not be surprised if half the people counted here had sold their copy and just forgot to remove it from their Collections.
Nettale Nettale
this album was released in higher quantity, so yeah. it isn't surprising that so many people say they own it.
Nalaylewe Nalaylewe
Just grabbed this. If I remember to come back to this post I'll update on how the quality is. I don't doubt that it'll be anything short of great though, it seems like a pretty comprehensive unofficial
Flash_back Flash_back
Got this the other day and it's quite good. Side A's sound quality seems to be a little worse off than B, C and D but it's still a worthwhile purchase. The quite necessary distortion / bass carries through perfectly and doesn't get mangled in any way. It's a good copy, albeit unofficial. The only thing I was slightly let down on was the colour, the image here gives off that it is a deep / intense colour but the reality is an almost transparent tinted vinyl with almost no swirl. Nonetheless still both pretty colours.
to anyone looking to buy now (i.e., 2018), i ordered mine in december 2017 and it came in february 2018.
Majin Majin
is this a bootleg of some sort or official? im confused given its still for sale, but its unofficial.
Onath Onath
Discogs seems not to have done a blanket ban of all unofficial releases. They are banning them piecemeal as they find them. But all these French 2xLP versions are boots.
Nejind Nejind
It's a bootleg. There was only one official pressing of 500.
Gerceytone Gerceytone
FYI, these files appear to be true lossless. The Grindcore Karaoke files have a hard cutoff at 20 kHz (IIRC), meaning they're lossy-sourced.
Ceroelyu Ceroelyu
If only those samples were cleared. Then I would be able to afford this without selling appx. 30 of my records
Vrion Vrion
Sounds pretty decent, can't complain. Deff worth picking up if the price goes down.
Ffel Ffel
any idea why Discogs is letting some of these sell, but has this one blocked for sale?
Kamick Kamick
I have this one and the sound quality is actually pretty great. Yes there's some surface noise but it's bootleg vinyl so it can't always be completely perfect. But the disks are thick and the packaging is pretty decent.
Gavinranadar Gavinranadar
Heh. Stumbled across this one at Amoeba Records during 2012's Memorial Day weekend. $20 new. Most people, when horrendously drunk, buy things that they don't remember buying. I pass on things I probably would've bought if I were sober. So, I didn't pick this one up. If you're the person who got it instead of me, you're welcome. :)Anyway, awesome mixtape. Still play it a lot. Worth tracking down.

(Update) I waited about a year for all my tapes to arrive in the mail they eventually did. Got so happy I ordered some more stuff just gotta be patient...
Globus Globus
18 months for me........ surprised they came at all tbh
Alsantrius Alsantrius
So does anyone know any info on the release of these? Okay so the original are the orm 1st issue, what are these
Uris Uris
I'm pretty sure after Orm sold out of the original cassette and there was people asking him to rerelease it DG took it upon themselves to release it themselves.
Amarin Amarin
I believe the third worlds cassette was released in conjunction with the first vinyl pressing, I remember both items being available in the band's hellomerch store back in 2011 when I bought the LP.
Mr.Champions Mr.Champions
Both vinyls were ugly ass clear peach. Sound is pretty fucking bad, like THVRSDAY said. Flat as fuck - basically no low end, and a ton of noise. Love the album, but I'll stick to the electronic version for now.
Xal Xal
Fucking $30 lol. You can still get this from Orm for $7
Preve Preve
Got mine now - 1 1/2 years later. But came with a tape of The Powers That B. Worth waiting for, haha.
Asyasya Asyasya
And wait 100 fuckin' years for the tape to actually ship?
Malodor Malodor
Can't recommend getting any of these unofficial Exmilitary releases from Vinyl Digital or wherever they are coming from. The sleeve is light paper stock that will get crushed and bent on its way to you overseas if you live in the US. I'm assuming I have the "clear peach" version, it honestly looks more like "clear and piss" which is kind of fitting so I'm cool with it.Overall, the record is flat, muddy, has surface noise throughout, and the stylus will run onto labels on all sides if you're not there to lift it in time.
Yellow Judge Yellow Judge
Hows the audio on this one?
Lbe Lbe
Fair amount of surface noise and the mix is a bit muddy. There also appears to be a flaw on side B that looks like residue right about at the end of Klink (especially audible over the Castaways sample). It causes an obnoxious popping that stands out over the music. Would have attributed it to an isolated occurrence, having picked up this bootleg at a local dealer (and returned it due to that defect), except that my second copy purchased from overseas demonstrates the same exact marring and popping noise. Mediocre pressing at best - good if you must have it, but don't pay too much for this cut.
Fegelv Fegelv
Just got mine, one was clear one was opaque.
Brightcaster Brightcaster
It's funny that there are only 100 of these in existence, yet 175 people claim to have one (i.e. the original run/pressing) - I know that is likely due to show similar the two pressings look, but if people could check their cassette against the pictures provided above, that would be great.
Thofyn Thofyn
these clear pink copies are now available online at vinyl-digital
Zeus Wooden Zeus Wooden
Needle runs onto the label in the middle if yr not careful or quick enough to take it off when a side is finished. Not sure if it's just my pressing.
Rko Rko
My copy has black vinyls & writes on spine & on back cover 'LIMITED EDITION" & on labels "for promo use only". I don't know the source but the sound is very cool, not surface noise. I m satisfied ONLY with sound. The cover has poor quality. A little warped vinyls but they re heavy, bad pressing due the dance "back & forth" of cathridge on vinyls' grooves. Finally i can enjoy it, the sound is not bad at all but don't spend over 20-25 euro for it!!
Cktiell Cktiell
Just dropped the needle on this pressing and there's a high amount of surface noise, louder than the Manson clip. Anyone else?
Wenes Wenes
manson clip always has alot of noise, its like that in the digital release too
Jaiarton Jaiarton
noisy pressing, a mess.
Marilace Marilace
Wont happen. Too many uncleared samples. Picked up a clear copy that is goodm
xander xander
noisy pressing, takyon is unlistenable. uhg
Mikale Mikale
grey vinyl pressing is great. Nice to have something to spin and can leave the (will never be officially pressed) legit pressing on the shelf, crazy expensive.
Reggy Reggy
Sucked in for buying a bootleg bahaha.
Molace Molace
yup lol

LP's aren't gray marbled, more gray smoked.sleeve showed up beat and V-D have been skirting around offering a replacement for a while now.

I think so.

Should I wait for a repress or just buy the unofficial vinyl release?
Manona Manona
There will never be a repress due to uncleared samples on the album.
Shou Shou
turns out this is just an upscaled copy. real FLAC was available on thirdworlds for a while, you can find it on /r/deathgrips

waitin for this fucker to arrive in the mail

Malogamand Malogamand
Anybody know how the clear/ clear reddish pink version sounds?
Cozius Cozius
I think this just sold out on Vinyl-Digital.
Dead Samurai Dead Samurai
Yea not a fan of the thin card stock either. Grey vinyl? copy seems to be more black with splatters of the smokey grey.
Inth Inth
Really not a fan of how thin the cardstock is that's used for the Cover. Feels extremely cheap and almost paper thin. However The vinyl quality is nice, and it's not so much Grey as smokey grey vinyl. Still really glad I picked this up.
Pemand Pemand
received mine with some light visible surface marks to the vinyl.. yet it still sounds more AMAZING than i expected! Pretty awesome pressing!
superstar superstar
This pressing sounds fantastic, highly recommended for anyone seeking an affordable copy of this LP. Colours look a little lighter on the front cover and the fonts are a different but these are merely superficial differences.
Sharpbrew Sharpbrew
Should a new entry be created for the 2014 release?
Vut Vut
i think it should be a new release. from a collection standpoint, the first pressing is inherently worth more than the repress, especially with its distinctions
Faugami Faugami
definitely. the cassette shell used is different, thus making it a distinctly different pressing, imo
Fog Fog
Yes, it should be. It is technically a separate pressing.
HeonIc HeonIc
no. it's a "silent reissue," there's no new features or difference, it's essentially a restock as stated before
spacebreeze spacebreeze
I don't think so. They're the exact same thing. More of a restock than a reissue.
Malojurus Malojurus
5 ⛧⛧⛧⛧⛧ Album. Sick live band too 10 word limit
Cordalas Cordalas
this new bootleg of course has DEATH GRIPS in a different font, thicker black border, tracklisting on the back is listed in black text not blue, no third worlds logo on the back, brownish labels as opposed to white labels, and the cover art isn't as vibrantly colored as the OG press.
Uste Uste
at least the music is still the same. they did not change the music. still sounds great.
Oparae Oparae
on these color variants, they usually keep pressing the colors even though they say "limited edition".they will move on to another color and then eventually get back to grey. the black vinyl sounds the best overall.
Black_Hawk_Down Black_Hawk_Down
it will never be "officialy" repressed. can not clear the samples on it. authorized bootlegs are ok in my mind.
Painshade Painshade
if it was authorized it wouldnt be a bootleg
this is most likely unauthorized lol
Samut Samut
Another thing that is much easier to identify - the bootlegs have a thicker black border on the front when compared to OGs.
Pryl Pryl
Original album cover has DEATH GRIPS in Helvetica down the left side. This version uses a different font, most likely Arial. Compare the capital R to verify.
Vudojar Vudojar
The "G" is different as well
Lahorns Gods Lahorns Gods
Can someone PLEASE post pictures?
Anardred Anardred
The record?
Mozel Mozel
pictures of what?
Madis Madis
Just bought this the other day and I can indeed confirm that it sounds great. Of course, the tracks with super distorted, clipping vocals still have the distorted, clipping vocals (think Beware and Spread Eagle), but the more sparse, clean tracks like Guillotine sound absolutely pristine on this pressing. If you've been wanting to have this on vinyl for a while you can definitely go for this and have a guarantee that it'll sound good.
