Description

Richard Georg Strauss (11 June 1864 – 8 September 1949) was a leading German composer of the late Romantic and early modern eras.

Also sprach Zarathustra. Conductor – Fritz Reiner Orchestra – The Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Vier Letzte Lieder Four Last Songs. Conductor – Erich Leinsdorf Orchestra – New Philharmonia Orchestra Soprano Vocals – Leontyne Price. Richard Strauss, Price, New Philharmonia Orchestra, Leinsdorf, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Reiner - Vier Letzte Lieder, Die Frau Ohne Schatten (Excerpt), Also Sprach Zarathustra ‎ (CD, Comp).

New Philharmonia Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Erich Leinsdorf, Fritz Reiner. Leontyne Price is magisterial in the Four Last Songs, and riveting in the Die Frau ohne Schatten extract. Reiner's Also Sprach Zarathustra is polished. New Philharmonia Orchestra. Patricia Clark (soprano), Leontyne Price (soprano), John McCarthy (chorus master), Ambrosian Singers.

Audio CD, March 9, 1993. In Chicago, the music would only get better as both Solti and barenboimbothe made fine recordings of this music later on.

Vier letzte Lieder, TrV 296: 3. Beim Schlafengehen - Erich Leinsdorf, New Philharmonia Orchestra. 4. Vier letzte Lieder, TrV 296: 4. Im Abendrot - Patricia Clark, Erich Leinsdorf, New Philharmonia Orchestra. 5. Act II: Erwachensszenen der Kaiserin - Erich Leinsdorf, Patricia Clark, John McCarthy. 6. Also sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30 - Fritz Reiner. More by Richard Strauss. Strauss: Also sprach Zarathustra, Don Juan & Suite from Le bourgeois gentilhomme.

Also sprach Zarathustra (Thus Spoke Zoroaster), tone poem for orchestra, Op. 30 (TrV 176). Like most of Strauss' tone poems, Also sprach Zarathustra employs massive instrumental forces; however, it provides a contrast to Strauss' more strongly narrative works in its deployment of the orchestra in a more subtle and deft manner. Here, short, transformable motives take the place of the long, sinuous tunes that emerge in works like Ein Heldenleben (1898). Richard Strauss: Also sprach Zarathustra; Vier letzte Lieder; Die Frau ohne Schatten: Act II (Excerpt).

Chicago Symphony Orchestra, James Levine, Chicago Symphony Chorus. The Star-Spangled Banner. Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Georg Solti. Prince Igor: Act III - Polovski March.

He is known for his operas, which include Der Rosenkavalier, Elektra, Die Frau ohne Schatten and Salome; his Lieder, especially his Four Last Songs; his tone poems, including Don Juan, Death and Transfiguration, Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks, Also sprach Zarathustra, Ein Heldenleben, Symphonia Domestica, and An Alpine Symphony; and other instrumental works such as Metamorphosen and his Oboe Concerto. Strauss was also a prominent conductor in Western Europe and the Americas, enjoying quasi-celebrity status as his compositions became standards of orchestral and operatic repertoire.
