To say the least, the December 8, 1942, recording of Wilhelm Furtwängler conducting the Berlin Philharmonic in Schubert's "Great" C major Symphony has led a colorful existence. It was recorded at the height of the Second World War by the Reich Radio Company for broadcast throughout Germany. At the end of the War, the tapes were stolen by the Soviet Army and issued for the first time on LP by Melodiya in 1956.
