Superunknown is the fourth album by American rock band Soundgarden, released on March 8, 1994 through A&M Records. Soundgarden began work on the album after touring in support of its previous album, Badmotorfinger (1991). Superunknown captured the heaviness of the band's earlier releases while displaying a more diverse range of influences. Superunknown was Soundgarden's first critical and commercial success and became the band's breakthrough album

Superunknown is the deepest, darkest, most innovative album in the Soundgarden catalog. It’s also their best selling and most popular work. Soundgarden had always been an intelligent band, but before Superunknown the lyrical content was uneven. Soundgarden lyrics prior to Superunknown often contained purposefully confusing or humorous lines. If emotion appeared in the lyrics, it was usually in the form of anger or rage. Also, there was no theme uniting the lyrical content of the songs. Superunknown marked a shift in the band’s direction

Superunknown was their fourth full-length album. It's Their Most Successful Album to Date. 1991's Badmotorfinger is known for being Soundgarden's breakthrough album, spawning the hits "Rusty Cage" and "Outshined," but Superunknown was really the one that broke them into the mainstream and gave them their most commercial success. Often compared to Nirvana's Nevermind and Alice in Chains' Dirt as one of the most influential albums of the '90s, the album debuted at No. 1 and has been certified five times platinum by the RIAA

Looks like there is an EU version of this now with label 0602537789818. Anyone else have this version?

Been telling people to uprise and email both Analogue Productions & MFSL to try and get a 320 repress goin'. Someone just messaged me on the Hoffman forum & said they'd just "spoke with Michael at MoFi and Carl at Analogue Productions requesting a repress from original analog tape or repress Universal 2004 issue. Michael said they have been trying 12 years but seems like there is always a snag but said they will keep trying. Mentioned if enough call in to request it might open doors..."Just passing along the info. If enough people want this... make it happen!

Give [email protected] a try as well! The AP web form is all I know of for them, short of an actual phone call

I just wrote to [email protected] and [email protected] I also tried to contact Analogue using their customer support web form, but I'm not sure if it went through. If there's anywhere else I should contact, please let me know! I'd love a copy of this album!

I know this sounds crazy but I am looking for Disc One ONLY - I have a copy of this album with only Disc Two - if anyone can help out I would be most appreciative!

I haven't heard the 200g version, but I thought this vinyl version sounded like crap. In stark contrast, the remastered 2014 CD sounds incredibly good: https://www.discogs.com/Soundgarden-Superunknown/release/8640936 That's the version I'll be listening to. Blesphemy, I know.

Can anyone tell me if ‘like suicide’ has the glitch present on euro version?

Sounds pretty good if you don't mind what sounds like tape saturation. Would have prefered it to be cleaner, but still, the music is terrific, and the vinyl is brightly colored and noise free. Really nice, and I'm glad I have it!
Skiletus Skiletus
I think it sounds pretty great, but it's not perfect. All of the SG remasters are heavily brickwalled, which is probably less of an issue with SG than other bands, they definitely wanted the sound to be thick from the get-go. But of course, a little less brickwalling would have been better. No one seems to know if they were sourced from analog or digital, which probably means digital. But the pressing is well-done.

does anyone have a review on the new Soundgarden Superunknown red and yellow vinyl for the 25th anniversary?need to know if its worth purchasing. i am audiophile listener, was hoping for a reissue from analogue originalthanks
Cenneel Cenneel
Don't plan on the analogue originals being used... really until further notice. The site stated this audio was from the 2014 remaster. The rest of this 35th anniversary of SG set are probably going to be similar AKA remasters used, not originals.

I have been thinking a lot if I should buy this release after having bought the 20th anniversary issue in black vinyl. Eventually, I could not resist anymore and today I am listening the album for the first time. My thoughts: the coloured vinyl are really cool though it seems to me they do not weigh as much as the black vinyl version. Both records are warped to some extent, red one more than yellow, though I have not been able to perceive the defect in terms of sound quality. In fact I tend to consider the sound crispier in this colored reissue. Also, the pressing is pretty silent except a rare click between the tracks. All in all I am satisfied with my purchase although I think it could has been better for the price I paid.

I don’t know why people keep saying original vinyl copies of this album sound bad I bought my orange vinyl copy in 1994 and when I heard friends play cd copies I definitely appreciated having it on vinyl I haven’t heard the newer version but my original still sounds amazing a Little noisy but the anologue sheen still shines through the original vinyl sounds great!!

Awesome packaging and overall presentation but the sound quality is confusing. I thought my speakers suddenly started messing up but realized that this pressing just doesn't sound very good. But some sides sound ok? Like I said, it's confusing how odd it sounds because I grew up listening to the CD and this does NOT sound anywhere near the same to me. I'm going to find a different pressing.
Brick my own Brick my own
I agree with Sonny Bone. I have the same exact pressings mentioned. The drums are super crisp which is great.. they sound live ...but the bass is a bit more flat in the mix...and noticably duller on My Wave...vocals sound more even in the mix or some what flat or behind the guitars n bass... I'm comparing this to the original of 1994 release. yes. This Re Rm quiet between tracks...yes...it's more even all around.. but I preferred the sludge and subwoofer of the original and the louder vocals...which is more in your face and what I remember Soundgarden sounding like... I ponder if the later plate pressings of this Re RM start to loose the "umpgh". If you're looking for super even steven clean mix...then this is your pressing. If your looking for the original earthquake sound and shit falling off shelves in your house then it is not.
Ginaun Ginaun
Anyone compared this with the QRP-pressing? I have this one and like it, but sounds a bit compressed, perhaps? Considering getting the QRP one ...
blac wolf blac wolf
Some of the art work in the booklet show guite some similarities with the artwork of Alice in Chain - Dirt album. I sometimes have difficulties with distorted gitares en voice on vinyl because this suggests issues with your records or needle :-)
Manemanu Manemanu
This sounds way better than any digital version I've had over the years. I won't disagree this mastering does sound a little compressed and it is a bit heavy on the low end as well, it's still a lot better than anything else I have heard prior. I don't have a 200 gram press to compare, I can't imagine it sounding much better than this 180 gram.
Faehn Faehn
Have one for sale? Lemme know! Been on my Wantlist for more than 5 years. :-)

Sound quality is disappointing to say the least. I returned mine.

The fact that you cannot sell this album on discogs reaffirms the fact that this site will never be as popular as other sites that sell vinyl records!
BlackHaze BlackHaze
Sounds great after a good cleaning in the Spin Clean and Air Dry! Pressing is super quiet. Sound quality is on par, a little muddy. I haven't played the CD in many years, but this is amazing compared to anything I've heard in the streaming category in the last few years.
Anaginn Anaginn
Sixteen page booklet? Can somebody confirm if that is accurate?
Mori Mori
Cristal clear pressing, with great sound and dynamic range, though a bit heavy on the bass. Frankly, I think the digital versions sound a bit better.
CopamHuk CopamHuk
I bought both the double record 198gr and double CD reissues. Aside from the fact that this is one of my favourite albums of all time and one of the best sounding recordings, mixes and productions I know, I was rather disappointed with the reissues. Both are completely over-mastered in my opinion. The volume level is maxed unnecessarily, which in the vinyl edition creates a considerable amount of distortion and interferes with the high treble. It's irrelevant that it was newly mastered from the original tapes, the new mastering was done badly. The CD is considerably better but not nearly as good as my original '94 CD. The original is quieter but when cranked sounds far bigger, has a higher sound ceiling and broader sound stage as well. The reissue works great for my iTunes and my classic iPod which I use when on the go; simply because its louder and, as y'all know, iTunes/Phones have a very low output volume compared to the cool gear we had as kids in the early 90s ;-)
Larosa Larosa
I bought mine from Europe and is labeled as the 180g version. I weighed my vinyl slabs using digital scales. 198 grams for A/B and 200 grams for C/D. Could it be that there actually aren’t two differently weighted versions of this reissue?
Ienekan Ienekan
I read up on this version, with mixed reviews from the Steve Hoffman forums, and other opinions on Amazon. Listening to it now through an Audio Technica AT-LP120 w/Klipsch RP-150M and a Yamaha R-30 receiver--in other words, low budget, good sounding gear (I also washed the record with a Spin Clean). With the bass turned down a smidge, the record sounds amazing. The guitars are loud and crunchy, the drums hit hard w/o crackling, but probably the best feature is how crisp and dynamic Chris Cornell's voice sounds. I got a great deal on this for $20 plus shipping. Well worth it, as this is one of my absolute favorite albums.
Zetadda Zetadda
This bootleg is hot garbage and those who created it should be punished.
Andriodtargeted Andriodtargeted
Picked up a copy of this recently and it sounds fine. While I'd say it's cut just slightly hot, it doesn't have the sizzling top end that people complain about with the US original versions or the bootleg black vinyl variants (2011 & 2013). It has a decent low end and the guitars ring out nicely. Cornell used a separate small PA for his vocals and this might explain a hint of hotness. The only limitation of this version is faint noise in the vinyl itself toward the end of the record. Otherwise it's a good listen.
Vizuru Vizuru
The only reason I gave this a four is the noisy vinyl. My copy looks pretty clean and I even gave it the ultrasonic treatment but still it's not as clean as it should be. It honestly sounds to be cut from a tape because there are portions of the vocals that don't sound like the cd and have a little more depth and life, even different dimensions at times. The low end is respectable and the top end isn't overly harsh. It's just a shame the vinyl formula itself isn't as good as it could be. I've even been told by people from Brazil that the vinyl quality there can vary quite alot. Otherwise it's not a bad cut at all and a different experience than the cd. It's actually cut a little quiet so give it some volume to open it up.
PanshyR PanshyR
I've listened to this album a gazillion times on cassette & CD and got tired of waiting for a better pressing (original LP isn't supposed to be that great anyway) but I was pretty afraid to get this release after all the (bad) press the remaster got...I was betting that the vinyl version might sound a little better, and it seems i was right. They certainly had a heavy hand on the 'loudness' factor since the listening experience can be a little tiring depending on your system and general state... but we're talking about a pretty heavy AND a 73 min long record after all!As for the pressing, everything is good: heavy records, flat and quiet. Artwork has been redone but not too horribly. Just a bit disappointed about the missing lyrics in the booklet. If you can get it for 25 bucks or less, it should do the trick until you get a '320' pressing.
GoodBuyMyFriends GoodBuyMyFriends
Sounds very muddy on vinyl... tried it on 2 different systems... and compared it to streaming which was much clearer and cleaner...very disappointed in it

speed808: Actually the recording was all analogue. According to the co-producer Michael Beinhorn, there was "no digital processing or recording at any point in the process."https://www.gearslutz.com/board/so-much-gear-so-little-time/34309-soundgardens-superunknown-recording-info-2.html?s=93632a38a5191cd269728890303bbc63I don't know the specific lineage of the "320" but AAA is entirely possible. This LP sounds pretty awesome.
Kitaxe Kitaxe
Sadly that link is now dead but the console used was an SSL 4064 G-Series with Ultimation sent to a Studer A 827.
MARK BEN FORD MARK BEN FORD
320 stamper is the only AAA version, wish they’d press more!!!!
Jack Jack
So JP, I finally picked up a copy of this guy and whatever the source is it does sound killer. It is so dynamic that I had to move my speakers further apart to mitigate the bass resonance. I think 4th of July is the definitive track for this edition. I would say its closest cousin is the Brazil original press that really does sound to be cut from tape but is plagued by poor quality vinyl. If the 320 metal parts are still laying around it's simply absurd that they haven't pressed more copies.
Windworker Windworker
According to this writeup:https://www.ipr.edu/blogs/technology/pro-tools-vcas-and-trim-automation-to-make-mixing-easier/The mixing console Beinhorn references does infact have a sort of early computer for the audio preview. Whatever the case I love the fact that he wanted to make the recording as dynamic as possible and it is evident throughout the album. Brilliant guy! Great link!

Can anyone comment on whether it is a digipak or a proper cd case?
Joni_Dep Joni_Dep
that definitely helped, thank you! at least 10 words to post

Mine came in a CD case with OBI strip. Hope that helps!

I have this pressing but mine has a promo sticker in top right corner of cover. People say this and original CD sound bad that is their opinion.
Dangerous Dangerous
This remaster is worlds better than the original physical copies. As compared to my original 1994 CD and digital rip, the soundstage is very noticeably fuller and crisper. While there is nothing wrong with the original master, I definitely recommend this edition on vinyl. No perceivable surface noise and this pressing includes a really nice lyric and art booklet. My only gripe is that I would have preferred the original cover art over the anniversary cover art.
betelgeuze betelgeuze
Phenomenal pressing, the quality is crazy. Talk about a solid sounding album.
Uylo Uylo
My orig version, on blue, that I sold, sounded like sht. I love this album, but does the treble / vocs pierce like on the orig recording? The horrible production has been noted on this in Discogs, I like the idea of a 200gm copy. I have a high end, vintage set up, would love to add this back into my library, but willing to wait for the right copy
Wnex Wnex
This is definitely the copy to get. It smokes the original cd for low end dynamics and top end balance. Still though I would like to see it get the full audiophile treatment by Speakers Corner or Analog Productions. Willem Makkee is no longer with us, the tapes aren't that old and I think they could give it an even bigger soundstage. If you are tired of waiting on a copy of the 320 then start contacting either Speakers corner or Analog Productions. If they see a real demand there will be a response.
VizoRRR VizoRRR
YES an Analogue Productions would be amazing. I wish DCC Compact Classics were still doin' their thing too. *shrug* Oh well. I'm gonna shoot an email over to AP right now! This pressing isn't as mind-bogglingly wide/depthy as the internet lets on. What it gains in bottom end it lacks in high-mid detail on both of my systems, so I was a touch disappointed in the lack of guitar detail compared to the cd. Definitely the best wax press so far though...
Dukinos Dukinos
And let me qualify the comment about the soundstage. When you hear either the half speed master or the Speakers Corner editions of Supertramp's Crime of the Century you will understand just how lifelike and enormous a soundstage can be. I think Willem Makkee worked with or for Speakers Corner so I do suppose the 320 is the closest you could get to one of their versions.

If anybody wants to part with their copy of this pressing, will be glad to take it off your hands in a heartbeat.

There seems to be some confusion between this pressing and the 200g.I ordered the 200 gram version and received this pressing. Sounds fine, but lacks the download card (no big deal) and hype sticker.

This is the version you need when you buy Superunknown. Sounds perfect!
Dyni Dyni
Nice copy plays great for that money ... so do not remember Soundgarden always naturally sounds darker :-)
Uscavel Uscavel
The overall sound of this version is good, but unfortunately there is a noticeable glitch in "Like suicide". So annoying to pay big bucks for these "putrandommultipleof5here" aniversary pressings that lack any kind of quality control (ironically then they call it audiophile pressing).By the way, R.I.P. Chris Cornell. So sad to lose such a talent.
Nicanagy Nicanagy
This record was expensive before Cornell died, don't disillusion yourselves.

Dammit I like clear vinyl but I don't have $245 to blow on this.. RIP Chris. It's fucked up people are charging this much for one of your records.
นℕĨĈტℝ₦ นℕĨĈტℝ₦
This record has always been expensive. What's fucked up is that the majority of people waited until Chris died before they thought about getting it. Anyway the reissue is $25.
Oso Oso
Ok, this looks like it has a LOT of tape. Anybody who bought this new- how did it sound then? Is the tape thin due to having almost 40 minutes on the second side?
BOND BOND
Ok, usually i hate all these glorifications when an artist passes. But when I realized Cornell had died, I had to relisten again. If I would be able to cry when hearing a record, I would have. One of the best albums of the 90s, it defines alternative rock. The strange thing is: Actually, I do not like all of their other recordings (I swear I have tried), even if this sounds like blasphemy to any Soundgarden fan. This is their moment of genius. Maybe it's overlong (thanks again, compact disc), but there is not a single bad song (save maybe the vinyl bonus track, I always lift the needle after Like Suicide). Truly monumental. RIP, Chris. And, by the way, if anybody here has the 320 reissue from 2004 and wants to sell, please write me!!!
Faugami Faugami
Interesting what you saying about their other recordings. because to me it's like if you really enjoy listening to all the Soundgarden elements [= 4 awesome musicians and personalities] you might be always hungry for more Soundgarden songs. but to each their own, ofc. and I can understand your point cause Superunknown sounds uniquely powerful and to me is one of the best rock albums ever. and yes, rest in peace Chris, you're greatly missed.
Gaua Gaua
AAA all analog cut like the 320 Badmotorfinger reissue of the same period. I bought it a number of years ago from a guy who mis-sold it as a first pressing, so let me say this - only those who inspect the deadwax will know they have this pressing; to all other appearances it looks like a Euro 1st pressing; a near identical replica just with lighter stock board. But that's where the similarities end. Audio quality on this is simply sublime. Bit like finding a golden ticket inside of a chocolate bar wrapper. Here it is:https://youtu.be/uGOSYSmOKyEEdit: 320 version is missing "Also available..." text on the rear compared to the Euro 1st. And the spine text is larger.
Dagdalas Dagdalas
Thanks for following up. So few available and when I see a 94 pressing available, it's sometimes sold as "sealed" so I often ask. I've never had as difficult a time finding an LP as I have this one.
komandante komandante
Well spotted, you're right, it doesn't have that text on the bottom. The rest of it is the same as the 1994 euro pressing. Good way of identifying it!
Ungall Ungall
Can you tell me if the back cover has mention of the "Also Available on Tape, Cassette and Compact Disc" at the bottom? One photo I have doesn't have that information and the barcode is in a different spot from 2014 pressings.
Funny duck Funny duck
Thunder & lightning! Flawless pressing that explodes out of the speakers, cut as hot as the sun, just the way it should be. RIP Chris Cornell...

I couldn't agree more, Strange coincidence I randomly purchased this album 3 weeks ago and it magically came to my door the same fateful morning he died.

So glad I bought my copy of this at a killer price when I did, as the vulturisc flippers are skyrocketing the price, cashing in on some good ol' Cornell blood money in the wake of his death. A curse on all your families for that shit, flippers. This version sounds a lot fuller and richer than the 2014 remaster, as well. Original pressings are the only surefire way to go!

I'm glad the discogs admin finally wised up and banned this mentally unstable person.

These are some comments you left on other colored-vinyl releases. So by your own definition, you're gullible, a sucker, and a fool for buying this gimmicky, worthless, crass, stupid, useless, and mediocre "blue" vinyl. Right?"Colored vinyl is POINTLESS and offers nothing special to a pressing. It sacrifices sound quality for aesthetic gimmickry each and every time.""When are people going to learn that colored vinyl is worthless and is nothing more than a crass marketing ploy to entice gullible collectors and flippers who depend on said gullible collectors?""Absolutely hilarious to see this gimmicky colored vinyl fetching ridiculously marked-up prices because it's a stupid color variant....Well hell, let's mark it way up then, for the fools who buy such things. I grew up with the original LP (european blue vinyl LP) which now bacame very thin from the use (listened to it over 2500 times :-). But this one has KILLER SOUND. Compressed guitars - brighter drums & vocals. I don't know what to say which is 'better'...the only i can say is that i love this album. Nice remastered sound BUT i prefer the original front artwork - gatefold pictures.

Just weighed these vinyls. Lp one is 160 gram and lp 2 is 180. Probably different for every copy I would guess. I had been meaning to do that after i opened this and realized these were not 200 gram. I have commented earlier. Great sound on my copy though just some false advertising on the weight. Still a great investment to me anyway.

Yeah, I noticed this right away too. The records aren't anywhere near 200 grams.

Best sound ever of this album!!! Very valuable and rare

I have to agree with mondie. This is the pressing to get. The american and euro pressed originals are overly bright, cut from a cd master and loaded with sibilance. The newest remaster is...meh. The 320 will shake the room. Good luck finding one though :).

I just picked this up yesterday. I'm assuming the copy I got is repackaged as there is no sticker or DL code included :/
SING SING
Hm, maybe we received this version: https://www.discogs.com/Soundgarden-Superunknown/release/8720063 ? That would explain the lack of the hype sticker and download card, plus the underweight vinyl.
Saithi Saithi
My sealed copy didn't have a hype sticker or download card either. I wonder if they didn't include it in the repress...I ordered my copy from Elusive Disc on backorder awaiting the repress, so I assume it's from the recent repressing.

I just picked this up as well and no DL card as well.

Very happy to have this 20th anniversary edition of Soundgarden's Superunknown on vinyl. Overall, it is a great pressing with good, clear sound. In particular, I noticed Matt Cameron's drumming and Chris Cornell's singing was more clear and, just in general, the vinyl sounds much better than the CD release. Very happy overall. My problem with this is the booklet included. As other reviewers have said, I am also missing the lyrics to some of the tracks, so do be aware of that. Anyhow, apart from this, a great reissue. Sounds great.

This scarce German pressing took me years to find but today at last I am spinning it for the first time. It sounds stunning, by far the best I have heard this brilliant album sound. I would rate it a 9/10 against my heavy rock reference - the original RL RATM vinyl which is easily a 10/10. These 320 mastering's definitely have a house sound, if you have heard any of the 320 Nirvana pressings then the dynamic sound, slightly dark bass and massively wide soundstage is all there and suits Superunknown perfectly. The music industry is an odd animal, this album has been pressed over and over but it if like me, its one of your desert island albums and you must have the best then you need to hunt down this HTF German 2004 reissue. It is the real deal amongst many missed opportunitys to release this album mastered properly from the original tapes.
