Ariadne auf Naxos (Ariadne on Naxos), Op. 60, is an opera by Richard Strauss with a German libretto by Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Combining slapstick comedy and consummately beautiful music, the opera's theme is the competition between high and low art for the public's attention. The opera was originally conceived as a 30-minute divertissement to be performed at the end of Hofmannsthal's adaptation of Molière's play Le Bourgeois gentilhomme

Opus/Catalogue NumberOp. This is the revised (1916) version of Strauss's much shorter opera of the same name (1912).

The collaboration between composer Richard Strauss and librettist Hugo von Hofmannsthal was one of the most brilliant and fruitful in operatic history, but it wasn't always a match made in heaven, as the gestation of Ariadne auf Naxos demonstrates.

This recording from the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra under JoAnn Falletta features the world premiere of the opulent Ariadne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss, arranged for orchestra by D. Wilson Ochoa. The symphonic suite enables the musicians to revel in works of extreme beauty and sensuous luxury, studded with gorgeous instrumental solos and the composer’s incomparable blend of poignancy, humour and melodic richness.
