Description

This album offers Leonard Bernstein in some quite rare (at least for him, on disc) operatic repertoire. Given his flair for the dramatic, it’s not surprising that Bernstein would take so winningly to Strauss’s Salome. The Dance of the Seven Veils is full of color, sparkle, and cloying sensuality Montserrat Caballé sings with solid, beautifully produced tone and communicates a sense of unbearable longing She’s also very good in the lighter, sweeter Strauss songs that follow. María de Montserrat Viviana Concepción Caballé i Folch OIC OAXS OMFRG LH OMIR (Catalan: ; 12 April 1933 – 6 October 2018) was a Spanish operatic soprano. She sang a wide variety of roles, but is best known as an exponent of the works of Verdi and of the bel canto repertoire, notably the works of Rossini, Bellini, and Donizetti

Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier. The main attractions are the Marschallin of Montserrat Caballé and the Baron of Otto Edelmann. Caballé who, as far as I know, had never recorded the entire rôle before, is in fine voice. Her German pronunciation is, ahem, idiosyncratic but she acts well with the voice and she gets the most out of the Monolog and the final act's Trio is glorious.
