This album oozes heaviness. It's dense, lumbering, layered super beast of an album. Jamming with Boris really brought out the best in all who participated on this album.

With that contrast between push and pull in mind, Altar- written and recorded largely before a joint tour last fall- risks leaving an audience stranded in the middle by inertia. Indeed, the second half of Altar does just that, leaving the audience adrift in left field with little direction or purpose.

Altar is as dark and gloomy as they come, with both bands contributing for this immense sonic experience that definitely has its moments, but that, in the long run, can't help but feel at least a little. Or consider a donation? Jenny Lewis with The Watson Twins.

However, ‘Altar’ never rests on its laurels and the structure of the album always seeks to move the listener on. Thus, having so clearly demonstrated the power of SunnO)))&Boris combined, ‘. (revealed by the sleeve notes to stand for ‘No Lap Top’) dispenses with SunnO))) completely and features not one guitar. This album is not at all what I expected from Boris and Sunn, and that's a good thing. The drone stuff is pretty well done, though both bands have done it better by themselves, but the middle two tunes are both completely unique and totally awesome.
