The best approach to discover this gem is trying to forget previous labels such as post-whatever or wtf-BM. Carlos Gonzalez Martinez. Carlos Gonzalez Martinez Experimental, heavy and sometimes just plain nasty. Some may call this post-black metal or even blackgaze, but this is pretty much it's own thing. It's an odd little masterpiece.

Teethed Glory and Injury, the third LP from Altar of Plagues, is again intended to do exactly that but in a much different way than before. I just found that the type of black metal we were being associated with was not exciting to me anymore, Kelly told Terrorizer in an in-studio interview earlier this year. What a few years ago was a very exciting and promising template for a genr. as also just been watered down. It builds through icy keyboards and scythe-shaped guitars, culminating in a coda that’s urgent and intricate, two qualities that often combat one another throughout Teethed Glory.
On Teethed Glory, Altar of Plagues attempt to evoke of the same calculated lifelessness, but they're not from New York, they're not from London, hell, they're not even from Dublin; they're from Cork. It's hard to empathize with the inhumanity of a soulless teel hell when the skyline's only four stories tall. It’s not even that this album is terrible. I think there’s a fair amount of interesting things going on throughout it, but Teethed Glory and Injury just presents itself in the wimpiest and soulless way possible. There’s this entire dissonant, pulsating atmosphere but it’s lacking any real defining characteristics. Each song just sort of moves from one sound to another – no melodies or motifs, no recognizable riffs or interesting drum work. It’s just this massive wall of sound that tries so goddamn hard to be impressive but just isn’t.

With "Teethed Glory And Injury", it feels like Altar of Plagues have found a truly unique niche within black metal. Comparisons can still be made with next-wave black metal contemporaries like Wolves in the Throne Room and Fen, and some of the post-metal veterans, but with Altar of Plagues' introduction of drone and noise, their sound has become that much more exact. The band split in June 2013 and for now it seems has called it quits at the absolute peak. Teethed Glory & Injury' is an album for the extreme metal ages- a sick celebration of the extreme. But just as its absolute ingenious cover radiates- the extremities are dealt with such confidence, brutal honesty, and a strange sense of wonder and inexplicable ecstasy that the extreme starts sounding very very logical.
