Description

CAN's first album after Damo Suzuki's departure. It's considered by fans as the last CAN's golden era album.

Soon Over Babaluma is the sixth studio album by the rock music group Can. This is the band's first album without a lead vocalist who does not play an instrument, following the departure of Damo Suzuki in 1973 during which he married his German girlfriend. The vocals are provided by guitarist Michael Karoli and keyboardist Irmin Schmidt.

One of the worst decisions on this album was to run this track straight into ‘Quantum physics’ with no silence between them. Due to the fact that ‘Chain reaction’ comprises different, disparate movements, it becomes uncertain where it has ended and ‘Quantum physics’ has begun.

Soon Over Babaluma Tracklist. 1. Dizzy Dizzy Lyrics.

Following Future Days, Suzuki got married to a Jehovah's Witness and left the band. After trying out several singers, Can eventually decided to keep things to themselves for Soon Over Babaluma, as Karoli took over vocals in most cases, with Schmidt helping from time to time. Due to circumstances, the record sounds obviously transitional, and was in fact the last one Can would complete using their tried and true straight-to-stereo method, before upgrading to more modern, multi-track methods afterwards. Dizzy Dizzy" is something like Can's version of ska (kraut-skank?), and features the first of several future Karoli forays using violin, on which he's surprisingly competent. His refrain of "got to get it up, got to get it over" serves the insistent, space-bounce of the track, and though the band would misstep on world music attempts in later years, this was pretty interesting.

On "Soon Over Babaluma", Can showed that they had not suffered from the loss of Suzuki. Indeed, the soft, yet intense sound of that album is carried even further here. The opening track, "Dizzy Dizzy" may seem a little humorous in its lyrical tone, but Karoli's quiet, almost spoken, voice is actually an excellent complement to the band's evolving sound. The funky groove shows the band moving into territory not seen even on Future Days. Dizzy Dizzy" has the pulsing repetitive sound, while "Come Sta, La Luna" is a real odd one with spoken voices, some Italian and Spanish influences.
