Irmin Schmidt - 5 Klavierstücke (2018). With the heartbreaking passing of Jaki Liebezeit and Holger Czukay in 2017 – and Michael Karoli in 2001 – Irmin Schmidt is now the last living core member of CAN, one of the most celebrated avant-garde bands in music history. On November 16, Schmidt will release his new album, 5 Klavierstücke (translated: "5 Piano Pieces"). Throughout his new LP, Schmidt employs contemplative piano motifs and pairs them with improvisational percussive elements and ambient noise. Date: 22 Nov 2018 18:34:33. Schmidt partly prepared his Pleyel piano (in the way he was taught by John Cage himself) and the other piano - Irmin Schmidt’s 100-year-old Steinway - remained unprepared. Several pieces were recorded in one session on the prepared piano only, others contain recordings from both pianos. All ambient sounds were recorded on site - around Irmin Schmidt's studio - and there are no other instruments or electronics of any kind. Irmin Schmidt's 5 Klavierstücke consists of five improvisations played on two grand pianos, one of which was prepared in the manner of John Cage, Schmidt's one-time instructor. The pieces alternate between slow, sparse reflections, recalling the minimalist beauty of Arvo Pärt, and locked-in rhythmic passages informed by gamelan, gagaku (Japanese court music), and the Motorik grooves of Schmidt's most well-known group, Can. While the pianos are the only instruments heard, Schmidt and producer Gareth Jones also incorporated ambient noises into the recordings. The album can seem a bit arid, but there's still a sense of spontaneity that keeps the listener intrigued, and it's welcome to hear the composer continue to explore new territory eight decades into his life.
