If I didn’t have a copy of 1984’s Deluge, I’d start questioning my sanity, but here it is: Michael Karoli & Polly Eltes Deluge. A hard album describe because it crosses so many non-Western, tropical-musical territories – Fear of Losing Control and One Thing (Or The Other) gives you that taste. But then, when it doesn’t it, like it will in The Lake and Deluge (The River) it sounds like esoteric Pop that is as much new age sojourn as it is wigged-out King Tubby-like roots exploration.

Michael Karoli (29 April 1948 – 17 November 2001) was a German guitarist, violinist and composer. He was a founding member of the influential krautrock band Can. In 1983 he collaborated with British actress, singer and ex-model Polly Eltes for his solo effort 'Deluge'.

Polly Eltes had been lovely diddling herself on the cover of Roxy Music's "Country Life" album, but could she sing. pparently so. I put it on an. amn! Nothing like I would've expected from Karoli, nothing Krautrock about it, but all of Karoli's off-modal flibbertigibbetery channelled into a kind of baroque gae/dub/funk/skronk stew, reminiscent most of all of the so many great singles Rough Trade was putting out circa 79-81: think Essential Logic, "Kitchen Tapes" Raincoats, all the early Scritti Politti stuff. up through "Sweetest.

The complete set would be more compelling and striking, though, if there were a little more focus - Karoli and Eltes spend quite a bit of time simply drifting into thematic hooks, leaving the listener in limbo for too long on a regular basis.
