Sleater-Kinney was an acclaimed, American rock band that formed in Olympia, Washington in 1994. The band’s core lineup consisted of Corin Tucker (vocals and guitar), Carrie Brownstein (guitar and vocals), and Janet Weiss (drums). Sleater-Kinney were known for their feminist, left-leaning politics, and were an integral part of the riot grrrl and indie rock scenes in the Pacific Northwest. The Woods is the seventh and final studio album from Sleater-Kinney, released. The Woods reached on the US Billboard Top 200 chart and on the Independent Albums chart. The album appeared at in The Village Voice’s Pazz & Jop critics’ poll for 2005. They bash Eighties nostalgia, tell a feminist fairy tale and even quiet down for a couple sensitive love songs – needed breaks from music so intense you wonder how they can contain its explosiveness.

Far from the retreat implied in its title, The Woods is another passionate statement from Sleater-Kinney, equally inspired by the call-to-arms of their previous album, One Beat, and the give-and-take of their live sets, particularly their supporting slot on Pearl Jam's 2003 tour

Sleater-Kinney had been critical darlings ever since Dig Me Out came out eight years earlier. Dig's mix of bass-less guitar interplay, intertwined vocals, and a recently published article in Spin detailing a brief relationship between band founders Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein made them a band to keep tabs on in underground music. Tucker and Brownstein followed that album up with three more that pretty much followed the exact same formula laid down by Dig Me Out. The Woods kicked the teeth out of Sleater's formula and found the band fully embracing cock rock.
