Angel (3) ‎– Kalmukia. a unique release in its own right, with sound textures belonging only on such a release and somewhat alien to other Angel releases. In fact, one would also claim that the "musical" canvas of "Kalmukia" would almost serve as imaginary soundtracks to non-existing fictionous motion pictures. Trading the somewhat "traditional" ive tonular soundcapes for guitars in the opener ("Bones In The Sand"), one could almost imagine this piece as a musical backdrop to a post-Leone western film.

The four extremely dank-sounding pieces on the album certainly have an accomplished feeling to them - the principals having worked in bands that know their way around experimental electronics and avant-garde work, one would expect no less. But this is an album better to admire for some of its individual elements rather than to regard as a uniquely compelling listen.

The original members of the band were Barry Brandt on drums, "Punky" Meadows on guitar, Frank DiMino on vocals, Greg Giuffria on keyboards and Mickey Jones on bass. Their self-titled debut album, released in 1975, was an excellent bit of heavy pomp rock, and their l yrics dealt with battles and events in history.

With Kalmukia, Angel seems to have created a sort of maximal minimalism, probing deep emptiness through an uncommonly rich variety of elements. There's no excess here, nothing especially self-indulgent despite the track lengths (together, the four clock in at just under an hour), but simply an extraordinary attention to detail and continuous progression.
