Description

Album · 2015 · 7 Songs.

Niccolo Brown No one does ambient techno quite like Voices From The Lake and "Live at MAXXI" is a seraphic refinement of the closely textured style Donato Dozzy and Neel showcased on their transcendent 2012 debut album. mental Blissfull and haunting, a truly inspiring journey. A Strangely Isolated Place. A Strangely Isolated Place Max is just absolutely ridiculous.

In stark contrast to the previous live 12-inch, cut from a set at The Bunker in New York, there are no heady beats to be found here. More than it lacks momentum, MAXXI lacks depth. It’s a difficult record to properly lose yourself in, with moments of real beauty interrupted by vacant stretches. It rarely submerges you completely, and lacks the sublime tension of Voices From The Lake's studio work, instead drifting by without much of a counterflow.

"Max" is widely considered a masterpiece, and rightly so - the ingenious use of a melody lifted from Paolo Conte's jazz piece of the same name creates a sublime and incredibly moving track and a fitting tribute to Italian producer Max_M, who passed away in 2015. When a friend of mine played this to me, I fell in love with it instantly. I mean, how couldn't you? Good memories from listening to this in a Neukölln hotel room after the Aphex et al party at Funkhaus whilst trying to get some kind of mental closure.I bought this album the day after on the strength of that track alone, not really expecting much from the rest of the LP. And side A-C are surely a different kettle of fish, and a lot less melodic and immediately accessible. But don't ignore them, 'cause they're really good too: Deep, droney, captivating sound sculptures which keep you in suspense throughout. Not a single dull moment on it, and it must have been a stunning experience to hear this music live. Sure, this LP is a game of two halves in terms of style, but do yourself a service and don't jump straight to "Max": The whole album is a trip!

The track 'Max' is probably the most beautiful piece of music I have heard all year around hands down, simply sublime. The ambience flows in different melodies moving in and out of the base of the song creating suspense. The piano, free flowing guitar, delayed high hats and the bassline that enhances the ambient landscapes just add the exact kind of flavor required to make this perfect of which it truly is. The other tracks are just there for company as far as I'm concerned and there's nothing close in terms of music compared to their previous releases on here so be warned, and If you have bought an album for 1 track before it will not be the last time as this fits that category unfortunately, my view anyway but worth it for Max. Just fantastic.

Track D saves this entire release. "Max" is literally a perfect track. My friend said he played this track for his new born son the other day, and he (my friend) started crying tears of joy. If not for the inclusion of that one wonderful piece of music I'd probably be wanting to sell this. No shot to the artists because on the cover it states that it is music for an exhibit of some sort, but before you buy this make sure you understand that this is not anywhere remotely close to their first album in aesthetic. I saw it in a record shop in Baltimore and bought it blind.
