Heather Leigh’s past explorations of pain have been both disorienting (2007’s Devil If You Can Hear Me ) and enveloping (this year’s Nightingale ), but this time, on I Abused Animal, she dissolves her misery into a fine, translucent dust.

For an album that is, in essence, very stripped-down and direct (one woman singing and playing the lap steel guitar), I Abused Animal is possibly the most mysterious one I've heard all year. Heather Leigh hails from the coal mining part of West Virginia, but has lived in Scotland for many a year, and has somehow managed to coalesce the most primordial, intangible elements of both locales' musical tradition into a work of art that is wholly unique as to defy such pat words as "folk", "noise" or "drone"

But Heather Leigh, whose new album I Abused Animal is a devastating entrail-sprawl of awe-inducing proportions, is very much at the top of the instrument’s game, both in terms of stretching its playerly parameters and expanding its free-flying capacities, leaving a virtual scorched earth in her wake. I Abused Animal, released in November on Stephen O’Malley of Sunn O)))’s Ideologic Organ imprint, is all the more potent for being Leigh’s first album of readily identifiable, yet fractally expanded songs, or song forms.

Fun, Fag Tapes, Wish Image and Volcanic Tongue. Warmly recorded in a secret location in the English countryside, the album transmutes the power of her captivating live performances to a studio setting, capturing her tactile playing in full clarity while making devastating use of volume and space. I Abused Animal is a personal, idiosyncratic and deeply psychedelic work, ranging from almost Kousokuya-scale black blues through the kind of ethereal electro-ritual of Solstice-era Coil.
