Spiritual Unity (LP, Album, Mono). Indeed this version of Spirits (US orIginal ESP 1002) is a trio performance of the same "Spirits" composition on side A of the Spirits album issued on Debut (a/k/a Witches and Devils/ Black Lion or Arista Freedom) and the Spirits included in ESP 3030 Prophecy (Cellar Café NYV 12 june 64). The so-called Spirits on subsequent reissues of Spiritual Unity is a performance of the tune "Children" on Side A of Ghosts (Debut w. Cherry Murray Peacock) a/k/a Vibrations (Freedom Black Lion or Arista)
Spiritual Unity was the album that pushed Albert Ayler to the forefront of jazz's avant-garde, and the first jazz album ever released by Bernard Stollman's seminal ESP label.
But Spiritual Unity remains enigmatic even now, nearly 35 years after Ayler's body was mysteriously found in the Hudson River. This latest reissue of Spiritual Unity transports me to an existence ecstatically free of time and place, bringing back memories of how I ï¬rst got swept away in the Ayler phenomenon years ago. Oddly enough, I never noticed the first track was recorded in mono until today-which is a sign that the disc's sound quality, while less than spectacular, does nothing to interfere with its effectiveness.
Redirected from Spiritual Unity (album)). Spiritual Unity is an album by the American jazz saxophonist Albert Ayler, with bassist Gary Peacock and percussionist Sunny Murray. It was recorded for the ESP-Disk label and was a key free jazz recording which brought Ayler to international attention as it was so "shockingly different". It features two versions of Ayler's best known composition, "Ghosts".
His trio and quartet records of 1964, such as Spiritual Unity and The Hilversum Session, show him advancing the improvisational notions of John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman into abstract realms where whole timbre, and not just mainly harmony with melody, is the music's backbone.
