Live in Greenwich Village was Albert Ayler's first recording for Impulse, and is arguably his finest moment, not only for the label, but ever. This double-CD reissue combines both of the Village concerts - documented only partially on previously released LPs - recorded in 1965 and 1966 with two very different groups.

Albert Ayler In Greenwich Village is a 1967 live album by free jazz saxophonist Albert Ayler. It was his first album for Impulse! Records, and is generally regarded as being his best for the label. Originally released on LP, the album has since been reissued on CD. At the urging of John Coltrane, Impulse! Records' first recordings of Ayler were made live

This double CD from 1998 combines all of the music on tenor saxophonist Albert Ayler's In Greenwich Village recording with a two-album set from the same sessions, titled The Village Concerts (the latter taken from two concerts in 1966-1967). In addition, there is one number from 1965, originally included on the sampler The New Wave in Jazz, and a previously unissued (and incomplete) "Universal Thoughts" from the 1967 date, one of the very few examples of Ayler using a trombonist (the forgotten George Steele)

The first Ayler LP I bought was the Impulse posthumous, double-LP, "Albert Ayler: The Village Concerts" (Impulse IA-9336-2), a discard from a radio station that was in great shape, looked and sounded like it had never been played. That was around 1983. I later enjoyed golden opportunities to see Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor perform live, each twice, though Ayler and several others were before my time. In my listening, Coltrane climbed to mountain tops in his late periods, for which I am forever appreciative, but Ayler reached sky high, and got there in these recordings. folk music, and just a lot more mind-opening stuff. To me, "Live in Greenwich Village: The Complete Recordings" is the most important music since Bach.

"Light in Darkness" and "Heavenly Home" are in mono. A version of "Saints" was recorded at the Village Gate session but no master tape of that performance has survived. All other selections are in stereo. "Universal Thoughts" is an incomplete performance, most likely because the tape ran out before its completion.

Housed in double gatefold Digipak with 28 page booklet.
