But the opening to Nachtmystium's latest record, The World We Left Behind, doesn’t establish a tone that’s particularly infernal, anxious, depraved, or to be expected from what might be the final record from these black metal modifiers. Instead, the spiraling, simple riff and plodding rhythm section betray a presiding laziness, a lack of effort and imagination that feel altogether alien for the long-intriguing Chicago band. You could almost imagine it on the radio.

This EP features 5 demos and, or totally reworked instrumental tracks from the bands 2013 album, 'The World We Left Behind'. This is definitely a 'for-fans' kind of release, but we feel these five tracks (coming in at nearly 40 minutes) are potent in their own right and deserve the be heard. Hyped as the final Nachtmystium album, The World We Left Behind should have been a farewell as equally ambitious and exciting as anything else in their recent output.
