Technically, it's been 16 years since Asleep at the Wheel last saluted Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys - with 1999's Ride with Bob, recorded for the short-lived DreamWorks Records - but it's never like Ray Benson's ensemble ever strayed far from Western Swing. Bob Wills was the driving force behind Western Swing, a form of Country & Western that fuses Jazz, Hillbilly, Blues, Big Band Swing, and many more rhythm forms together creating a truly Unique, Diverse and Unforgettable sound. Wills' shrewd mix of horns, fiddles and steel guitar made for a swinging sound that grabbed the public's ear during the mid 1930s and 1940s. Bob Wills was born into a family of fiddlers on March 6, 1905. His father, John Wills regularly won Texas fiddling competitions. Bob learned how to play fiddle and mandolin from his father.

This album is just me trying to get younger and older Bob Wills aficionados together. Every time we put one of these out, I always say it’s the last one. But I shouldn’t say that because it’s not like this music ever died. Highlights on Still the King include Lyle Lovett‘s bluesy take on Trouble in Mind ; the late-night salon vibe of Time Jumpers’ Faded Love ; Old Crow Medicine Show‘s breakneck Tiger Rag ; and Robert Earl Keen’s loopy Ding Dong Daddy From Dumas, a song he was truly born to sing. North Carolina’s Avett Brothers also score with The Girl I Left Behind Me, making Wills sound as if he might have been the father of Appalachian freak folk as well as Western swing. Girl I Left Behind Me’ was a song we’d already been doing when we were out with Old Crow Medicine Show, so it sort of picked us in a way. Ray has an interesting take on it all.

Updated on Jun 17, 2018. Years active 1929‒1969 Genres Western swing. Wills and Duncan left the Doughboys in 1933 after Wills had missed one show too many due to his sporadic drinking. Wills recalled the early days of what became known as Western swing music in a 1949 interview. The musicians completed the album without him. Wills by then was comatose. He lingered until his death on May 13, 1975.
