Instinct: Decay is the third full-length album by Nachtmystium. It was rated the 4th best album of the year by Decibel Magazine. The album was released on CD by Battle Kommand Records and on Vinyl by Profound Lore Records and Autopsy Kitchen Records. According to Blake Judd, the album is a metaphor for his views on society's decline.

However, on their album Instinct:Decay Nachtmystium reserve the keyboards and melodic guitars for making supremely enjoyable black metal, instead of bland, bombastic extreme metal. The guitars on this album play catchy, yet fierce riffs that will stay with you very easily. Every song seems to have one or two great riffs that make each song unique and excellent.

Chicago's Nachtmystium have been haunting the dank basements and bat-filled belfries of America's burgeoning black metal scene since 1998, but like most of their countrymen, their works were generally too indebted to Scandinavian sources to earn them credentials to contend on the worldwide stage. That may be about to change with 2006's Instinct: Decay, an album that generally stays true to the group's intentionally primal and lo-fi black metal roots, while simultaneously plunging over the abyss of progressive experimentation.

Nachtmystium release Instinct: Decay through Battle Kommand Records, which is lead man Azentrius' label, but they have recently been signed to Century Media. What makes Nachtmystium such an interesting and unique band is that they incorporate psychedelic elements into their black metal sound.
