Staircase is the fourth solo album released on ECM by jazz pianist Keith Jarrett. It features Jarrett performing four solo piano pieces recorded in the studio. Jarrett and producer Manfred Eicher had arrived at Studio Davout in Paris to record a soundtrack to Michèle Rosier's film Mon cœur est rouge (Paint My Heart Red). Finishing early with several hours of studio time left and impressed by the quality of the studio's piano, they spontaneously decided to record this album.

As such, it is paradoxically his weakest solo piano album of the '70s and also the most influential, for here is the blueprint for sensitive meandering that the New Age piano crowd took off upon in the 1980s. A studio session, Staircase is actually only one of four separately titled improvisations on this double album (now on one CD) - the others are "Hourglass," "Sundial" and "Sand" - but their overall moods of repose are so similar that it hardly matters what they are called

This solo piano album by Jarrett is quite a contrast to earlier work such as Bremen/Lausanne. That set I can only best describe as "waterfalls of sound". This album, in contrast, is quite austere, not a lot of ornate piano passages in it. The melodies also strike me as much more introspective. Also, I would say that it has more classical influence than his earlier solo works.
