Though the content is uneven in quality, Jarrett is clearly sincere and skilled enough to exploit his European roots with only a handful of syncopated references to his jazz work. The strongest, most moving individual pieces are the strange, gong-haunted "In the Cave, In the Light" (the probable source of the title of Jarrett's publishing company, Cavelight); "Metamorphosis," with its rich, flowing string lines, prominent solo flute, and free journeys in and out of tonality; and the Bartok-streaked String Quartet.

I am slways telling people the uselessness of genre labels, and In The Light reminds me to practice what I preach. And reminds me in the best way: This is orchestral music, full or horns, murky, ambiguous textures, and of course, Keith Jarret's piano, though not in the quantity you may think. Which is just fine, because it is the master pianist who choose this direction, which is perfectly done. This music reminds me of the work of film composer Jerry Fielding, who scored movies such as the 1971 Straw Dogs.
