X is the ninth studio album by the Norwegian experimental collective Ulver and the Tromsø Chamber Orchestra with additional aid from composer Martin Romberg. Written and produced by Ulver, released on October 8, 2013, via Jester Records and Kscope. The album has been described as a "peace mass for Lebanon". On September 17, 2013, a trailer was released, and on October 4, 2013 the track "Shri Schneider", was released for streaming via Pitchfork Media.

Their latest LP is Messe . –VI. X, which sees the band teaming with the 21 members of Tromsø Chamber Orchestra and delving further into their e tenedcies. Stream the LP in full below. Ulver is scheduled to play Maryland Deathfest 2014 in their first US appearance ever. Their live performance will undoubtedly mirror their trajectory; completely unexpected.

Those s Ulver return with an offering as solemn and monstrously beautiful as 2007’s Shadows Of The Sun. Messe fuses echoes of the Catholic Mass – fragments of prayer, hints of sacrifice and the cross – with Gorecki-like orchestrations, krautrock and electronica. This is music that takes the vile shadow of history and – with unexpected sensitivity – both moves and chastens. Standout tracks include the understated pathos of ambient-inflected As Syrians Pour In, Lebanon Grapples With Ghosts Of A Bloody Past. Here sounds of violence interweave with plangent strings

X is a collaboration with the Tromsø Chamber Orchestra, a performance recorded rather than altered in the studio. This is not merely a live recording, it is a moment in time achieving immortality through its engagement with sound and experimentation. Many parts throughout are quite bombastic, Ulver and the orchestra together finding that moment of ecstasy, then returning to the picture of two lovers desperately trying to find wholeness in each others’ arms. Noche Oscura del Alma begins with a small wave of sound permeated by a whistling noise, which falls apart into madness and remains there for quite some time. A bad trip in a smoky jazz club, this is perhaps the strangest of tracks on the album, perhaps the climax of a story without a happy ending. Ulver Live Tromsø Kulturhus September 21 2012.

Full of subtlety and breathtaking beauty, the album is most unusual for the fact that Kristoffer "Garm" Rygg only sings on two songs-one, "Son of Man" (8:25) (9/10) on which he almost sounds as if he is trying to reach operatic heights, yet, which unfortunately renders the song perhaps the weakest on this powerful album.
