The album was released on April 29, 1983 by Twin/Tone Records. According to the record label, Hootenanny sold more than 38,000 vinyl copies. In 2008, The album was remastered and reissued by Rhino Entertainment, containing seven additional tracks.

The album is primarily a punk rock album, however it does flirt with sounds of other genres, such as on the track 'White And Lazy', which features a bluesy/country influenced sound at times. The sound can only be described as raw, or under produced to the benefit of the record. Although the rough sound is primary, The album begins to hint at what is to come from Paul Westerberg's songwritting on later albums, the key example on the extended re-Issue is the home demo of the track 'You're Getting Married' which features only Paul Westerberg. Though even on the tracks on the original release, you can begin to hear it also. Lyrics - 8 The lyrics, are to be honest, at times not at the forefront, mainly it's the sound of the songs it contributes to.

The band broke up in 1991 due to internal tensions. In 2006, the surviving members (without the original drummer Chris Mars, and without Bob Stinson who died in 1995) gathered together and recorded some new tracks for a Replacements compilation. On 3 October 2012, it was announced that The Replacements were active again.

The Replacements began to distance themselves from the hardcore punk scene after the release of Stink. We write songs rather than riffs with statements," Westerberg later stated. Inspired by other rock subgenres, he had been writing songs that incorporated a wide range of musical styles. His album Folker was released in September 2004, marking a return to the melodic low-fi of the Replacements. Dunlap kept a low national profile but remained active in the Twin Cities music scene until a suffering a massive stroke in 2012, which left him without the ability to move or eat. Mars primarily works as a visual artist.
