Description

The Tony Williams Lifetime was a jazz fusion group led by jazz drummer Tony Williams. The Tony Williams Lifetime was founded in 1969 as a power trio with John McLaughlin on electric guitar, and Larry Young (. Khalid Yasin) on organ. The band was possibly named for Williams' debut album as a bandleader, Life Time, released on Blue Note in 1964. Its debut album was Emergency!, a double album released on Polydor/PolyGram Records in 1969

Continuing the jazz-rock style of the Tony Williams Lifetime that sparked from the band’s debut album Emergency, (Turn it Over) featured bassist Jack Bruce, who had departed from blues-rock band Cream. Jazz drummer Tony Williams described this album as his version of Kick Out of the Jams and a change in society or in his words, turning over society (Szwed). Shortly after the release of (Turn it Over), the band disbanded due to management problems with Monte Kay and Jack Lewis who managed Williams' band (Menn). Turn it Over) Q&A.

C) 2007 Estate of Anthony Williams. In 1997, Verve asked Bill Laswell if he would be interested in picking an album from their (jazz) catalog to give a redux treatment-as he had successfully done for Columbia with Miles Davis's recordings on the CD Panthalassa-and he chose Tony Williams' Lifetime-Turn It Over.

Thanks to tiburon for sharing the tracks on the internet. tiburon noted: In 1999, Bill Laswell decided to re-imagine this seminal jazz fusion album. However, Verve Records refused to release the album once it was completed, claiming it would never sell. However, it was released on CD-R directly to a small music shop in New York City frequented by Bill Laswell himself, the Downtown Music Gallery. A rare, unreleased version of The Tony Williams Lifetime album, Turn It Over.

The better of the two albums the Tony Williams Lifetime recorded in 1970, Turn It Over, is a far more focused and powerful album than the loose, experimental Ego, and one of the more intense pieces of early jazz-rock fusion around. In parts, it's like Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys with much better chops. It's more rock-oriented and darker-hued than their debut, 1969's Emergency!, and the temporary addition of ex-Cream member Jack Bruce on bass and vocals alongside stalwart guitarist John McLaughlin makes this something of a milestone of British progressive jazz.
