The Tony Williams Lifetime was a jazz fusion group led by jazz drummer Tony Williams. The Tony Williams Lifetime was founded in 1969 as a power trio with John McLaughlin on electric guitar, and Larry Young (. Khalid Yasin) on organ. The band was possibly named for Williams' debut album as a bandleader, Life Time, released on Blue Note in 1964. Its debut album was Emergency!, a double album released on Polydor/PolyGram Records in 1969

The better of the two albums the Tony Williams Lifetime recorded in 1970, Turn It Over, is a far more focused and powerful album than the loose, experimental Ego, and one of the more intense pieces of early jazz-rock fusion around. In parts, it's like Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys with much better chops. It's more rock-oriented and darker-hued than their debut, 1969's Emergency!, and the temporary addition of ex-Cream member Jack Bruce on bass and vocals alongside stalwart guitarist John McLaughlin makes this something of a milestone of British progressive jazz.

Tony Williams formed Lifetime after leaving the Miles Davis Group in 1969, around the time "In a silent way" was finished. His partners in crime where initially guitarist John McLaughlin (who turned down Davis' offer to join his group since he felt he will be rather able to play his own compositions with Williams) and Hammond-innovator Larry Young, with ex-Cream bass player Jack Bruce joining them in 1970. Lifetime lasted just two years. Loads of distortion, psychopathic lyrics and erratic drumming were the trademarks of this remarkable project. Once Lifetime opened a concert for The Who and were almost beaten off the stage by the bewildered crowd.

The Tony Williams Lifetime has been played on NTS over 10 times, featured on 12 episodes and was first played on 12 December 2012. Once in a Lifetime may refer to: Once in a Lifetime (1932 film), based on the play by Kaufman and Hart, starring Jack Oakie. Once in a Lifetime: The Extraordinary Story of the New York Cosmos, a 2006 documentary.

Lifetime: The Collection. Lifetime: The Collection. The first six cuts of this collection are from the album "Believe It" a jazz fusion classic. Tony Williams was a jazz vet having played drums with the Miles Davis Band since he was 17. Tony Newton has played bass for John Lee Hooker, T Bone Walker, and on many many Motown hits. He has a "Hit" making funky way of playing and it moves the music along nicely. If you dig great guitar and even greater drumming then you will like Tony Williams Lifetime featuring Alan Holdsworth. I think its the best work either of them have done and should be in any jazz or progressive rock lovers collection.

With Emergency, Tony Williams helped create the foundation of the style and sound of fusion. It's a seminal release. Or consider a donation? User Lists.
