The Trio of Doom was a trio consisting of John McLaughlin on guitar, Jaco Pastorius on bass and Tony Williams on drums.
The Trio of Doom was a short-lived jazz fusion power trio consisting of John McLaughlin on guitar, Jaco Pastorius on bass, and Tony Williams on drums. They were brought together by Columbia Records in 1979 to play the Havana Jam festival in Cuba alongside Billy Joel, Kris Kristofferson, Rita Coolidge, and others. Their only live performance was on March 3, 1979, and it is recorded on Ernesto Juan Castellanos's documentary Havana Jam '79.

Trio of Doom (named by Pastorius with customary eccentricity and humor) display a recognition of the simplicity of the blues in the easy shuffle of Williams' original "Para Oriente, which might serve the new generation well. The general brevity of the tracks is perhaps inevitable given the multi-act concept of the label-sponsored concert from whence come these eighteen year-old recordings. Nevertheless, McLaughlin, Pastorius, and Williams didn't just jam for a half-hour, an approach they might well have been capable of given their collective wealth of technique.
The Trio of Doom - John McLaughlin, guitar; Jaco Pastorius, bass; Tony Williams, drums - performed at the March 3, 1979, Havana (Cuba) Jam festival and entered a New York City studio for the only time five days later to work on some of the material from the show. The basic story is that John McLaughlin, Tony Williams, and Jaco Pastorius put together a short (25 mi. set of music for the Havana Jam in 1979. Since the music was due to be included on a live album, John blocked the label from releasing the live performance and reassembled the crew at a studio in NYC to rerecord the tracks with crowd noise added (which thankfully is absent in this release). Things went very badly in the studio due to the pent-up tension from the gig, and the three guys never worked together again.
Certainly the potential of a recording by this trio featuring guitarist John McLaughlin and drummer Tony Williams (both members of Lifetime with organist Larry Young) along with bassist Jaco Pastorius - aka the Trio of Doom - is enormous. This compilation contains a performance of the trio at the Havana Jam in 1979, a . State cultural tour by a large number of American musicians who played on the same stage as Cuban aces. The band rehearsed and had about 25 minutes on the stage. For starters, Williams' drum solo that opens the album is to die for. There is no excess, no showing off - only an intense orgy of rhythm. When McLaughlin and Pastorius join him, the crowd must have gone crazy because he shifts nonstop into the guitarist's composition "Dark Prince.

So, what happens when you put drummer Tony Williams and guitarist John McLaughlin (both of whom rose through the ranks playing with Miles Davis) alongside über bassist Jaco Pastorius? Without even hearing a note, fans familiar with these players would instinctively buckle their seat belts and hold on for dear life. Whether or not that took place on March 3, 1979, at the Havana Jam when these three masters united for a one-time live performance is subject to speculation; however, the fireworks exploded that night for 25 minutes during the Bay Of Gigs.
