The crown jewel of MEMORIAM’s achievement is, of course, their debut album, "For the fallen". It has a massive yet underground sound - somewhere between yet beyond "Transcend the Rubicon" and "The IVth crusade". To find closure and peace of mind. So says vocalist Karl Willets, he of Bolt Thrower fame, of his new band’s positive modus operandi. Karl, along with his old scene pal, Benediction bassist Frank Healy, started Memoriam as a means to process their grief following the respective deaths of Bolt Thrower drummer Martin ‘Kiddie’ Kearns and Frank’s father. Both men wasted no time talking ex-Bolt Thrower drummer Andy Whale out of retirement for his first studio recording since 1994’s death metal classi. or Victory, and rounded out the lineup by recruiting a relatively unknown riffmaster, Scott Fairfax

Memoriam, a pseudo intro, throws a respectful salute to Kearns and bassist Frank Healy’s late father in its commemorative lyrics and commences the album with thick, staccato palm mutes. Reduced to Zero the pre-release track, did nothing to impress me when I first heard it - I’m happy to report that in the context of the album, it’s actually a very effective song.
