Boy is the debut studio album by Irish rock band U2. It was released on 20 October 1980 by Island Records and was produced by Steve Lillywhite. Boy contains many songs from the band's 40-song catalogue at the time, including two tracks that were re-recorded from their original versions on their debut release, the EP Three. Boy was recorded from July to September 1980 at Dublin's Windmill Lane Studios, which became U2's chosen recording location during the 1980s.

Boy was U2’s first commercially released full length album. The album was recorded in 1980 in Dublin. Originally U2 had approached Martin Hannett, who produced 11 O’Clock Tick Tock, to produce the Boy album as well. The album was recorded at Windmill Lane, and some songs were written and recorded in the studio, while others had been a staple of live performances for years. New versions of Out of Control, Stories for Boys, and Twilight were recorded for inclusion on the album instead of relying on earlier recorded versions released on singles. Most of the recording took place in July – September 1980.

The songs may occasionally show some weakness - the driving "I Will Follow," the dark "An Cat Dubh," and the shimmering "The Ocean" stand out among the sonic textures - yet the band's musical and lyrical vision keep Boy compelling until the finish.

The album that saw U2 reclaim their place as world’s biggest rock band was also the moment at which they stopped looking forward and started strip-mining their past. Out of the blocks they rush, a quartet of snotty Dubliners with bad skin, terrible fringes and an unassailable belief that, despite all evidence to the contrary, they have a message the world needed to hear. As with most debuts, Boy is rickety and naive, but also contains early moments of signature U2 transcendence.
