Talking Back to the Night is the third solo studio album by English recording artist Steve Winwood. Released less than two years after the top 3 hit Arc of a Diver, it failed to see as much success as its predecessor, reaching on the Billboard 200. "Valerie" was a minor hit in 1982, but when it was remixed and re-released in 1987 for Chronicles, the newer version of the song became a top 10 hit. The album tracks "Help Me Angel" and "Talking Back to the Night" were also remixed for Chronicles

Steve Winwood is a very good multi instrumentalist and this is predominantly eighties synth pop. He does a very good job of it as anyone who has ever heard his eighties output could certainly attest to. There are many good songs on this album, Valerie, the lead track, being one of my favourite radio songs when I was a young fella. If you liked arc of a diver, you will probably like this. Arc of a diver being a little better album. There's good stuff on here includinghelp me angel, valerie, and talking back to the night. Chronicles(1987) features versions of those songs listed above and are much more produced and much more powerful. Valerie, from chronicles, has been played on mainstream radio since then. I love winwood's vocal range and his keyboard patterns and it's interesting to hear a rock album so stripped down. This album is much better than 1980s arc of a diver (while you see a chance).
