War is the third studio album by Irish rock band U2. It was produced by Steve Lillywhite, and was released on 28 February 1983 on Island Records. The album is regarded as U2's first overtly political album, in part because of songs like "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "New Year's Day", as well as the title, which stems from the band's perception of the world at the time; lead vocalist Bono stated that "war seemed to be the motif for 1982.

After showcasing songs from the upcoming album in the UK, Europe, and Ireland, War was released in March 1983. In the UK, a special picture disc of War was released which featured the black and white Peter Rowan cover. In August 1991, the album was re-issued with red lettering on the cover instead of the pink colour that was on the original issue - part of the Island Master series. Elsewhere in the world, a Japanese release of the album contained a comic book-style insert

War was the third studio album released by U2. After working with U2 on Boy and October, Steve Lillywhite told the band he wasn’t interested in producing a third album for the band. This lead to a period where U2 tried out a number of producers. These were the first recording sessions with a new album in mind. They worked on a single 3-minute track at Kingdom Sound on Long Island. The song was described as a psychotic rockabilly song by the band.

War’ was a loud and clear statement that U2 were ready for the world. Published on. March 12, 2019. The next time we heard from them on an album, they had developed into something more outspoken, more political and even more muscular. The message went out, just like the title says, with a single released on New Year’s Day, 1983. Fearlessly addressing the Polish Solidarność movement that dominated the headlines of the period, it proved that political motivation and rock credibility can be bedfellows after all.

The energy and insistence of the opener is sustained across the album. Two Hearts Beat As One" and "New Year's Day" are thrilling, finally showing the intense passion Bono's voice was capable of imparting when he had the right words to wrap it around. The U2 we've known ever since had arrived on War, and even today it sounds vital. As much as cynical critics and listeners often swipe at U2 for their earnestness, it's still refreshing to hear a band that cares so much, wants to be heard by so many, and isn't afraid to show it.

U2 ‎– War. Etichetta: Island Records ‎– 422 811 148-2. Written-By – U2. Note. Recorded at Windmill Lane Studios, Dublin, Ireland Mastered by Phil Brown at Warner Bors Recording Studio . 1983 Island Records Ltd.

War became the first U2 album to crack the Top 40 (it made it to No. 12), thanks to the constant exposure the band received from MTV's full-force embrace throughout 1983. The live record culled from performances on the career-making tour in support of War, Under a Blood Red Sky, helped seal their image and legacy when it was released in November. MTV was all over that too, airing clips of Bono already in total command of the stage and his persona. From here, things got bigger, better and more complex

Notes

This is the 2010 Japan re-issue CD of War by U2.

Comes with red paper 'Ultra Price' branded paper OBI. Priced at ¥1,390 as per OBI.

Both the inner and back inserts are the same as the 2008 remastered release (UICY-1424) but the disc and OBI show the new catalog # of UICY-91626. So obviously a repackaging of sorts to sell the CD at a lower price point.
