The Headhunters: Herbie Hancock (not on this album), Mike Clark, Paul Jackson, Bill Summers, Bennie Maupin, Harvey Mason. Profile: The Headhunters represented a major turning point for Herbie Hancock, whose approach to fusion became slicker and more commercial (though not without substance or integrity) with the formation of this popular band in 1973.

In 1975, Herbie Hancock's group the Headhunters, which brought him immense success at the time, released their first solo album. Produced by Hancock, but without his participation, the lineup features the Thrust group of Mike Clark on drums, Paul Jackson on bass, Bill Summers on percussion, and Bennie Maupin on various reeds, plus new guitarist DeWayne "Blackbird" McKnight, who toured with Hancock and performed on the Man-Child and Flood albums.

Survival of the Fittest is the debut album by the Jazz/Funk quintet The Headhunters. The album was released by Arista Records in 1975. The album features the stand out track "God Make Me Funky", which has been sampled numerous times by prominent rappers. Labeled as "the best space-funk album" in the CD version, released by BMG France, in 2001. A digipack that includes liner-notes in English and French. This CD version was digitally remastered from the original master tapes in 24-bit by Jean-Pierre Chalbos.

Survival of the Fittest is a funk jazz music album recording by THE HEADHUNTERS released in 1975 on CD, LP/Vinyl and/or cassette. The Headhunters rate along side The Meters and The JBs when it comes to the Godfathers of funk jazz, but The Headhunters have the edge when it comes to the more extended jazz influenced jams. Also, due to their ultra technical drummer, Mike Clark, The Headhunters take on the funk is jazzy and abstract in a style where the beat constantly turns around and shifts in unpredictable directions.

The Headhunters are the backing band of Herbie Hancock and their debut album is one of the best-selling jazz/fusion records of all time.

This album is nothing less than outstanding. Understanding that even than there were people who thought of funk primarily as dance music, the Headhunters thoroughly embraced the "united funk" era here in a more truer way than perhaps they even expected.
