Steppin' is the third studio album by the Pointer Sisters, released in 1975 on the ABC/Blue Thumb label. Steppin', which was more R&B heavy than the sister quartet's previous albums, generated a number one R&B hit with its first single, "How Long (Betcha' Got a Chick on the Side)"

The Pointer Sisters are an American R&B singing group from Oakland, California, who achieved mainstream success during the 1970s and 1980s. Spanning over four decades, their repertoire has included such diverse genres as pop, disco, jazz, electronic music, bebop, blues, soul, funk, dance, country and rock. The Pointer Sisters have won three Grammy Awards and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994. The group had 13 US top 20 hits between 1973 and 1985.
Sisters continued to look ahead, carving their own niche in a genre soon to be glutted with contenders. This set is a thriller, from the opening funk groove of the number one hit "How Long (Betcha' Got a Chick on the Side)," which remains a delicious collision of mid-period soul, funk, and nascent disco, to their energetic cover of Stevie Wonder's "Sleeping Alone" and "Chainey Do," which sports jazz fusionist Herbie Hancock on clavinet. Sparklers like these only serve to whet the Pointer Sisters' own appetite, though, as they work their way through.
Their fourth album, Steppin’, came out in the summer of 1975 and launched with a classic: How Long (Betcha’ Got A Chick On The Side), a funk-laden groove that soared to the top of the R&B charts and just grazed the Top 20 on the pop side. The other tune that got a little traction on the pop charts was another funky track, this time from the pen of Allen Toussaint: Going Down Slowly. The sisters pay tribute to Duke Ellington in a medley called I Ain’t Got Nothin’ But The Blues, and then take a page from the Andrews Sisters’ stylebook in Save The Bones For Henry Jones. I love the Duke Ellington medley, "I Ain't Got Nothin' but the Blues.

The Pointer Sisters' second album, the 1974 release That's a Plenty, continued in the jazz and be-bop style of its predecessor but provided one exception that caused a great deal of interest: "Fairytale", written by Anita and Bonnie Pointer, was a country song that reached on the pop charts, and on the country charts. Based on this success, the group was invited to Nashville, Tennessee where they achieved the distinction of becoming the first Afro-American group to perform at the Grand Ole Opry.
