On the innovative Planet Drum album, Hart brought together Nigerian drum legend Babatunde Olatunji, Indian tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain, Nigerian talking drum ace Sikiru Adepoju, Puerto Rico's master conguero Giovanni Hidalgo, and Brazilian percussionist Airto Moreira, and jazz singer Flora Purim. The album won the very first GRAMMY(tm) for world music in 1991, spent an unprecedented 26 weeks at on the Billboard world music chart, and remains a world-music staple.

On this one, he brings together artists from cultures as diverse as India, Brazil, and Nigeria. The idea was for everyone to simply get together, start playing, and see what would happen. Some of the album's best moments feature singer Flora Purim ("Light Over Shadow," "Lost River"); another is an exciting program piece called "The Hunt. Temple Caves," a fragile and lovely piece that defines more space than it fills, is another high point. But most of the album consists of repetitive, monochromatic jams that start out pleasant and lulling and quickly become merely annoying.

He is best known as one of the two drummers of the rock band Grateful Dead. He was a member of the Grateful Dead from September 1967 until the group disbanded in August 1995 Hart has written books on the history and traditions of drumming throughout history. His solo recordings (featuring a variety of guest musicians) are percussive but verge on New Age.
