Originally released as 55 CDs and SACDs recorded at Kobe Shoin Women's University Chappel, Japan. The series was reissued as a set of 55 SACDs and also as digital files, including Hi-Res (studio) versions.
The 25th volume of the ongoing Bach Cantata series undertaken by BIS and Bach Collegium Japan is a milestone in a great project. The cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach (German: Bachkantaten) consist of at least 209 surviving works. As far as is known, Johann Sebastian Bach's earliest surviving cantatas date from 1707, the year he moved to Mühlhausen (although he may have begun composing them at his previous post at Arnstadt). Most of Bach's cantatas date from his first years as Thomaskantor (director of church music in Leipzig), a position which he took up in 1723

In this the second volume in the series, the four works come from Bach's Weimar period, specifically from 1714 and 1715: Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen, BWV 12 (Weeping, sighing, sorrowing, crying); Gleichwie der Regen und Schnee vom Himmel fällt, BWV 18 (For as the rain and snow fall down from heaven); Nun Komm, der Heiden Heiland, BWV 61. (Now come, the heathen's Savior); and Komm, du süsse Todesstunde, BWV 161 (Come, sweet hour of my death).
S. Bach - Das Kantatenwerk is a classical music recording project initiated by the record label of Telefunken in 1971 (first recordings had been made in December 1970) to record all 193 sacred Bach cantatas. The project was entrusted to Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Gustav Leonhardt. Each conductor had his own instrumental ensemble, based in Austria and the Netherlands respectively.
Bach’s cantatas comprise roughly one-fifth of his overall oeuvre – alone 150 of the 190 sacred works in this genre appeared in his time as cantor at St Thomas Leipzig between 1723 and 1726. Thematically, the series is orientated to the liturgical year escorts the listener from the Advent season to Christmas and Epiphany, through to Lent, Easter, Ascension Day and Whitsun. Cantatas for the Trinity Sundays, the Marian festivities as well as the feast of St Michael and the Reformation feast determine the ecclesiastical year.
