I feared Te Kanawa who faded tonally by the 1990s, but she is excellent here. Solti's cast nearly matches those of Munchinger and Gonnenwein but his conducting is livelier than both with a superior orchestra and chorus. He doesn't match the spiritual profundity of Eugen Jochum with the RCOA/Philips or Karl Richter (twice), but I find his soloists - especially Te Kanawa and Von Otter more consistently attractive.
