When I brushed up the history of cantata recordings, I was amazed to see that Werner's versions are among the first recorded ones: they are neither naïve nor specifically old-fashioned. Instead, they are well-studied, balanced and keep the necessary tension without being heavy-handed or pedanti'. Speaking of the cantatas on this album, Werner's reading of BWV 85 (1959), BWV 182 (1962), BWV 26 (1961), BWV 61 (1961), BWV (1961) are just 2nd.
