Jad Fair wants to be near you so badly he'd undergo just about any hardship the universe could throw at him to make it happen. I guess the only question remaining would be this: would you want Jad Fair to be that near to you? Your answer is likely to vary based on your point of view. Words of Wisdom and Hope is one of those records that just begs questions about its intent. This is due entirely to Jad Fair's presence, as Teenage Fanclub's musical contributions can practically be viewed as a separate artistic entity from Fair's geeky rambling.

Teenage Fanclub are a Scottish alternative rock band formed in Bellshill in 1989. Teenage Fanclub have had a succession of drummers, including Francis MacDonald, Brendan O’Hare and Paul Quinn, who left the band after recording the album Howdy!. Quinn was replaced by the returning Francis MacDonald. Keyboardist Finlay MacDonald (no relation) has also been a member. - "Near to You" (with Jad Fair).

Teenage Fanclub is probably the purest pop act to get involved with Fair, and the result is easily the most straightforward album to have his name on it in some time, possibly ever. Please note, though, that this doesn't mean it's particularly polished. The Glasgow natives contributed melodic intervention, but with a garage-like spontaneity to it. This perfectly matches Fair's geeky yet sincere declarations of having a "Crush on You," and similar declarations on other love odes such as "Near to You" and "Cupid.

Apparently, Jad’s been hanging out in Glasgow quite a bit recently with his old buddies, crashing at Norman Blake’s house and exhibiting his weird primitivist art in a local dental practice. Out of the inevitable araderie jam sessions came these tracks (and a forthcoming album), notable not only for their playful spontaneity but for the unlikely ease with which the Teenage Fanclub’ classicism blends with Jad’s eccentricity. Katrina Mitchell from The Pastels pounds the skins and adds sweet harmonies to ‘Near To You’, while super-cute b-side ‘Always In My Heart’ plays.
