For all of the brilliance of records like Bandwagonesque and the underrated Thirteen, at times Teenage Fanclub seemed little more than a showcase for the laconic melodic genius of Norman Blake - fairly or not, the songwriting contributions of bandmates Gerard Love and Raymond McGinley suffered mightily by comparison, mere filler when stacked alongside Blake-penned marvels like "The Concept" and "Norman.

Songs From Northern Britain. After 2000’s Howdy!, an album of quiet triumphs-the off-kilter rhythm of Dumb Dumb Dumb, Cul De Sac ’s otherworldly drift-Teenage Fanclub started taking longer between records, retreating even further from the spotlight. They now seemed more willing to put the band on hold to gather new energy from collaborations and side projects.

Grand Prix is where Teenage Fanclub perfected everything that originally caused people to pay them any attention. The harmonies, the happy jangle, the sunny disposition were all in place, all delivered with more confidence than on any Fannies albums before or since, and the songwriting is frankly stunning. What follows those three tracks is just as good. As a matter of fact, the quality only slides on two of the album's 13 tracks, one of which is a throwaway experiment called "Hardcore/Ballad", which closes the album (and even that isn't bad, per se - just a little underwhelming). But by that point you basically don't care, because each one of the other 11 tracks is a sun-drenched pearl.

Teenage Fanclub remain Britain’s foremost underachievers. Critically feted for 1991’s Bandwagonesque LP (famously chosen as Spin Magazine’s album of the year, beating Nirvana’s Nevermind), they’ve since steadfastly failed to break through into the mainstream. 1995’s Grand Prix remains their high watermark. Yet you’d struggle to find a more perfect pop album than this. From the opening rush of About You and Sparky’s Dream through to the slower, reflective Verisimilitude and Going Places, Grand Prix is an album about being hopelessly, head-over-heels in love. Musically the template is familiar, but lyrically it’s their most mature work to date with Gerard Love’s line in Don’t Look Back ( I’d steal a car/to drive you home ) remaining one of their best.
