Soft Machine plunged deeper into jazz and contemporary electronic music on this pivotal release, which incited The Village Voice to call it a milestone achievement when it was released. It's a double album of stunning music, with each side devoted to one composition - two by Mike Ratledge, and one each by Hopper and Wyatt, with substantial help from a number of backup musicians, including Canterbury mainstays Elton Dean and Jimmy Hastings. The Ratledge songs come closest to fusion jazz, although this is fusion laced with tape loop effects and hypnotic, repetitive keyboard patterns.

Third is the appropriately titled third studio album from English jazz rock band Soft Machine released in 1970. This album marked a complete shift in ambition and genre for the group, transitioning from the psychedelic influence of their early work to a hybrid of both jazz and progressive rock. Released only a couple months after Miles Davis' revolutionary album Bitches Brew, Third is similar in its ambition to merge the jazz and rock worlds together

Soft Machine was founded by college dropouts Robert Wyatt and Kevin Ayers and a constantly changing lineup in 1966 as a jazz/psychedelic project. They can be sourced as one of the leading bands in the British progressive rock scene including bands like Caravan, Gong and Matching Mole. The first album they released was in 1968 entitled Volume ONE and following in 1969 with Volume TWO this continued until of course there was THIRD in 1970. They continued to make jazz and father out there albums after Third

Vo. was recorded already as quartet with new guitarist/bassist Hugh Hopper and first in band's history sax player Brian Hopper on board. After a few weeks of putting it off, I listened to Third, my first Soft Machine album. These guys have taken jazz fusion and canterbury, fused them together, and contorted, twisted, and bent them into this wild hot pot of psychedellic jazz (I'm getting very creative on the adjetives this time). The 80 minutes that I spent with the album were very exciting and interesting.
