Rock Bottom is the second solo album by former Soft Machine drummer Robert Wyatt. It was released on 26 July 1974 by Virgin Records. The album was produced by Pink Floyd's drummer Nick Mason, and was recorded following a 1973 accident which left Wyatt a paraplegic. He enlisted musicians including Ivor Cutler, Hugh Hopper, Richard Sinclair, Laurie Allan, Mike Oldfield and Fred Frith in the recording.

Rock Bottom is the music Wyatt made to help with that healing process. The album was primarily written while he was healing in the hospital. Enlisting friends like guitarist Fred Frith, poet Ivor Cutler, Mike Oldfield and Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason (as producer), Wyatt recorded Rock Bottom shortly after his release from the hospital. The album is deeply inspired by his relationship with Alfreda Benge, who Wyatt married on the day Rock Bottom was released. She painted both covers for the album (for the original and the 1998 reissue) and appears at the end of Alife

Robert Wyatt had been an integral member of the Soft Machine, Canterbury, England’s greatest art-rock band. Where other art-rockers looked to wild theatrics and grandiose concepts, the Soft Machine plunged ahead into their uncompromising music. This brilliant solo album was being written before Wyatt fell from a five-story window and broke his spine. 1995 Mojo considered Rock Bottom to be the 100th best album ever. Pitchfork says it’s the 98th best album of the 1970s and the NME proclaimed it the 358th best album of all time. However, with Wyatt, goals and aims feel irrelevant. Rock Bottom sounds like an expression of himself, without plan or striving. It is him, and those musicians, at that moment. You may not like it, but whether he succeeds or fails is not a valid question.
