Album · 2008 · 11 Songs.
In 2008, they released their final album, Victory Shorts. When not recording and touring with Absentee, all the band members had side projects, Michaelson with Dan Michaelson and the Coastguards, Ganjei, Bronstein and Earle with Wet Paint, and Bronstein with The Bronsteins Discography.
Absentee cut way back on the country-rock on their second album, Victory Shorts. He has one of the deeper voices you're likely to hear outside of doo wop or opera; he sounds sort of like a steadier Johnny Cash or a way steadier Calvin Johnson.

Victory Shorts, 2008. Victory Shorts, 2008. The Nurses Don't Notice a Thing, 02:01.
Absentee brings together a deep bass male voice that reminds me of some cult 90s music. The back up vocals are assisted by a light & breathy female voice that truly makes the whole album sound harmonious and crisp. I find myself humming these songs long after I've shut them off. I would describe this as definitely 90s inspired, some folk music in there too. When listening, I picture it raining outside, while I'm sitting inside, sipping a cup of tea and looking out the window at the fall foliage. Or, I could also totally listen to Absentee while driving.
60. Absentee's Dan Michaelson proves he could give Lee Hazlewood and Mark Lanegan a run for their money, but its not just his voice that plumbs depths.
Absentee are built around the baritone of frontman Dan Michaelson, a gravelly voice that recalls Leonard Cohen and the Magnetic Fields' Stephin Merritt. If only Michaelson's lyrics could match theirs for social insight, devastating romanticism or sharp wit. Nonetheless, this second album gleams with promise. There's a heartfelt warmth to The Nurses Didn't Notice a Thing, in which a man in a maternity ward wants to applaud as his wife's waters break but fears it would be "inappropriate".
