Ratworld, the highly touted debut from Leeds group Menace Beach, is a fuzzy, sugar-crusted indie rock platter with a '90s problem. Fortunately, the band's founding duo of Ryan Needham and Liza Violet wear their influences well, and their apparent affection for everything from chugging, Pavement-like slacker rock to wobbly, Slowdive-era shoegaze is framed nicely by some quality songwriting and pleasingly loose production courtesy of part-time bandmate and Hookworms frontman Matt "MJ" Johnson. We knew the band had a great deal of talent but just how that would translate into 12 songs is always difficult to tell. We take you through each track. Menace Beach's resulting debut album, Ratworld, could be 2015’s best ‘90s-influenced release. Just as the ’80s saw a ‘60s lia revival, so go Menace Beech, reminding us what we loved most about '90s groups like Slowdive, Helium, Melting Hopefuls, and many indie bands that disbanded upon encroaching parenthood. Violet’s Blue Eye soothes while songs such as Elastic, Dig It Up, and Infinite Donut provide a sugar rush of infectious pop melodies. Menace Beach are in good company mining these sounds. Over the last few years the same intersection of early '90s alternative and indie-rock has inspired vital releases from Speedy Ortiz, Swearin’, and Joanna Gruesome, but Menace Beach are even more committed to their specific set of influences than those groups. Their closest peers, in that sense, are Yuck, another band that's so fully internalized their record collection that their music becomes a form of roleplay. They co-wrote the album together, and Ratworld reaches puppyish levels of excitement every time one of its choruses unites them. Theirs is the rare lead vocalist/backing vocalist dynamic that feels like an equal partnership, with Violet’s injections propelling these songs nearly as much as their rubbery bass lines or pogoing guitars.
