Humpback whales have what many zoologists to be a form of culture: whales in different regions will have different songs from year to year, all the males singing the same song, what musicologist David Rothenberg, author of Thousand Mile Song, describes an anthem. Remarkably, humpbacks can collective change the song as a group – within a week all the males will synchronise with each other to a new pattern of shrieks, growls, moans and rumbles. The discovery of whale song. Together Payne and Watlington released the songs as the album Songs of the Humpback Whale in 1970, and arguably kick-started the environmental movement. Whales are mammals, like humans, and their ancestors once lived on land. So how did they come to be so specialized for life in the sea? Within the exhibition, skeletons of fossil whales show visitors how the whale lineage evolved from land mammals to fully aquatic whales. These two articulated skeletons are female (front) and male (back) sperm whales - the largest toothed predators on earth. The male sperm whale shown here measures 58 feet long, about the length of one and a half school busses.
As well as the close-knit families that they live in for their entire lives, they also belong to larger "clans": with specific dialects to match. The Caribbean clan members do not meet often, but when they do they use specific codas. You can hear an example of this in the clip below. These clans can consist of several hundred individuals.
Some whales have teeth while others have baleen. Whales are amazing! They live their whole lives in water and have a lot of special qualities. Not surprisingly perhaps, the biggest mothers on Earth give birth to the biggest babies; baby blue whales are truly bonny babies! A newborn blue whale is 6-8m (20-26ft) long and weighs up to three tonnes (3000kg or 6,613lb), that’s heavier than an adult male rhino. The baby feasts on mum’s fat-laden milk (it is 40-50% fat) and drinks about 225 litres (about enough to fill a bath) every day, gaining about 4kg an hour. This is the fastest growth rate of any creature on Earth; the baby gains up to 100kg (220lbs) in body weight every day.
