One of These Nights is to Hotel California what Fleetwood Mac is to Rumours: the breakthrough album that sets the scene for the game-changing follow-up. Featuring a sleek, pop-rock vibe that downplays the folk and country elements of the Eagles' earlier albums, this LP’s hit singles helped define the mid-'70s California sound. Beyond the sultry title track, the melancholic ache of "Lyin' Eyes," and the soulful balladry of "Take It to the Limit," the album also features the gloriously spacey instrumental "Journey of the Sorcerer.
One of these nights One of these crazy old nights We're gonna find out, pretty mama What turns on your lights The full moon is calling, the fever is high And the wicked wind whispers and moans You got your demons and you got desires Well, I got a few of my own. Ooh, someone to be kind to In between the dark and the light Ooh, coming right behind you Swear I'm gonna find you one of these nights
The Eagles’ fourth album represents the apex of post-Byrds Southern California rock. Their music reflects the Hollywood ethos of glamorous, narcissistic ennui, exhibiting the contradiction between the city’s atmosphere of laid-back machismo and its desperate rootlessness of spirit. Even the Eagles’ more plaintive songs have a surface sweetness that belies the jaded pessimism of so many of their lyrics . Despite its many strengths, One of These Nights is not a great album. True, the Eagles’ ensemble playing is unprecedentedly excellent. But they lack an outstanding singer. While many of their tunes are pretty, none are eloquent.
