Unlike those those bands, Chvrches avoid guitars almost entirely, but the hooks on The Bones of What You Believe are indelible regardless of instrumentation, and the sound is immaculate. After Chvrches self-produced the album in band member Iain Cook's own Glasgow studio, big-deal boards guy Rich Costey (Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine) handled the mixing; his touch gives these tunes the bright clarity they deserve, with plenty of space for funhouse sonic triggers- processed effects, pitched-down vocal samples, frizzy synth-pad textures. That sense of precision is unusual for a band this new, but Cook and Martin Doherty, who handle the majority of the instrumentation live and on record, are vets of Glasgow's perpetually fertile indie scene.

To say this album has an ’80s feel would be like saying Glastonbury festival is quite well known: you can hear a semblance of Human League, an echo of Pet Shop Boys and even a smidgen of early Madonna all fizzing around in the circuitry.

Their debut studio album, The Bones of What You Believe, was released on 20 September 2013, while the band was ranked fifth on the Sound of 2013 list by the BBC. Two years later, on 25 September 2015, the group released their second album, Every Open Eye. Their third album, Love Is Dead, was released on 25 May 2018. Chvrches began work on their third album in February 2017 in Los Angeles. On 24 February, Dave Stewart of Eurythmics posted on Twitter that he was in the studio working with the band. On 12 December, it was announced that Greg Kurstin had produced the album, and that work on the project was nearing completion.

And if you thought that Chvrches had front-loaded the album with all their best work, you'd be wrong again. Recover' is a soaring shower of musical pyrotechnics that hears Lauren bluntly offer herself up for heartbreak, while 'Science/Visions' is a dark, thumping number that has flickers of Depeche Mode and Frankie Goes To Hollywood sci-fi. It still doesn't end there, though. It's very rare that an album can hold firm consistency throughout, but it's even rarer that it happens on a debut record. Let it be known that 2013 is a golden year for new music, and Chvrches are far and away leading the pack.

CHVRCHES' debut album sounds enormous, in the best way possible. The hooks here are massive and irresistible; the production is maximalist, overwhelming only insofar as that's the point. Their biggest strength is undoubtedly (in my opinion) Lauren Mayberry's way with a pop melody, but twelve straightforward pop bangers would get exhausting, and their experiments, while not universally successful, keep interest level at a high.
