With its fifth album, Back From Hell, Run-D. set out to regain the support of the hardcore rap audience and pretty much abandoned rock-influenced material in favor of stripped-down, minimalist and consistently street-oriented sounds. Not outstanding but certainly enjoyable, such gritty reflections on urban life as "Livin' in the City," "The Av. and "Faces" made it clear that Run-D. was still well worth hearing.

Down with the King is the sixth album by hip hop group Run–D. released on May 4, 1993 by Profile Records. The album was produced by Pete Rock, Q-Tip, EPMD, DJ Kay Gee of Naughty by Nature, Jam Master Jay, The Bomb Squad, Daniel Shulman, Run-D. Chyskills, Jermaine Dupri and Clifton "Specialist" Dillon. Showcasing their evolving style, this innovative album boasted invited guests, including reggae star Mad Cobra and Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello.

Their last album was officially a Run-DMC album but should have been a RUN-Jam Master Jay album. Due to vocal issues DMC could not or didn’t want to participate on this album. Still Crown Royal is packed with good contemporary hip-hop tracks. The usual hip-hop/rock tracks are also included, Take The Money And Run being the best of that bunch. The beginning of the album is really strong, with great songs like It’s Over, Queens Day and Crown Royal, but the album levels out during the second half. In theory Crown Royal could have placed fourth, had it been a real Run-DMC record. The lyrics are decidely more conscious, more akin to their debut, with several interesting themes such as race, crime, and prison. Back From Hell is a very good album, consistent but without those standout classics. King Of Rock (1985).

Run-DMC seem to have suffered particularly from the pressures of ceaseless innovation: and on Back From Hell - its very title an apparent reference to how this new direction would return them to the pinnacle of rap stardom they had once occupied - the trio would trip themselves up trying to keep pace with the competition. Nevertheless, the album found the band making desultory run-throughs of tropes from the then commercially dominant gangsta style, and their sense of this chasing-the-market approach being the right one would have only been reinforced when the swingbeat-infused single 'Pause' - an intended stopgap release from 1989, which the band's label, Profile, refused to let them release until an album.
