These are, however, only surface similarities. Duw A Wyr is distinct from its predecessor in two crucial respects. It's warm music, which Steffan sings as though singing love songs, and it's music that was first sung by working people. Music born in the valleys, but bound for Zion. She has also closely studied the songs of Joni Mitchell and James Taylor and this, combined with the ancient Welsh poetic tradition, gives Lleuwen a unique lyrical imagination. In 1998, at the age of 17, Lleuwen released her first single, her own song, Draw Dros yr Afon, which had extensive airplay in Wales.

Huw Warren was the co-leader and founder of the jazz quartet Perfect Houseplants, with Mark Lockheart, Dudley Phillips, and Martin France. Perfect Houseplants have recorded five albums for various labels (including the Scottish label Linn) and produced collaborative projects with early music artists such as Andrew Manze, Pamela Thorby, and the Orlando Consort. Warren has had a long and continuing collaboration with English singer June Tabor as her arranger and musical director. Warren arranged and produced a Welsh Hymn Project in 2004, Duw A Wyr (God only Knows) with singer Lleuwen Steffan, which received media exposure on radio and TV in Wales, including a S4C documentary about the making of the album. He has also worked extensively with partner Maria Lamburn, co-producing 3 albums with her and setting up Maizeh Music.
