In addition to the various ancient peoples dispersed throughout modern-day Italy, the most famous of which being the Indo-European Italics who gave the peninsula its name, beginning from the classical era, Phoenicians and Carthaginians founded colonies in insular Italy and Genoa, Greeks established.

A nice mix of some familiar faces (Marta Sebestyn, the Trio Bulgarka, Ivo Papasov) with some less familiar entries from the various expanding worlds of Eastern European music - which saw a traditional revival in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and then a kind of fusion insurgency that produced some particularly quirky blends.

The 'Rough Guide to World Music for Children' is the perfect album to broaden children's musical horizons through the diverse collection of tried and tested tracks from around the world. Also includes a free 'Dance the World' bonus CD, containing the best dance music from around the world. Welcome to a world of joyous upbeat sounds that children love, carefully selected from across the planet. This Rough Guide spotlights the front-runners of an explosive revival of African roots music. Listen to world-class artists, such as Staff Benda Bilili and the Bedouin Jerry Can Band, mix it up by infusing traditional sounds with the ultra modern, and by using ingenious homemade instruments, many of which are built from junk-yard materials. These are the sweet sounds of a movement which has not simply preserved, but truly reinvented musical genres with outstanding results.

Occasionally, a Rough Guide compilation hits the bull's-eye and this is a case in point. The best in film, music, TV & radio straight to your inbox. Independent culture newsletter.
